Hi there! My name is Juliet Cushing and I am a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles. I have a passion for understanding the human experience through the lens of healthcare, food, and social inequality. My family's farm in rural eastern Oregon brought me to Gilliam County and ultimately the South Gilliam Health Center. Working there, I connected with the community and started to appreciate the intimate patient-provider relationships seen in rural settings. I also recognized the unique health disparities induced by rurality, namely, diabetes: a condition shaped by the foods we eat, the healthcare we have access to, and the conditions we live in. I am working towards my goal of becoming an endocrinologist and physician-scientist. I aim to apply cutting-edge research to a primary care setting where I can advocate for my patients and implement the changes needed to better their lives. I am committed to bridging the gap between the healthcare system and the food system so that local, nourishing food can improve the wellbeing of those who need it most.

Clinical Research CoordinatorUcla Health Feb 2024 - PresentLos Angeles, California, United StatesI manage the statewide UC Diabetes Prevention Program and act as the administrator for UCSB and UCM's programs. I lead the development of new cohorts through recruitment, scheduling and eligibility screening. I manage data collection via Qualtrics and Excel, and carry out data submission to the CDC to maintain research funding. In this role I individually counsel DPP participants who are working to decrease the amount of sugar-sweetened beverages they drink. As a trained health coach, I employ motivational interviewing to help participants identify their goals, design a strategy, and ultimately accomplish a challenging behavior change. I develop meaningful relationships with each individual by truly listening to them. I approach each conversation with unconditional positive regard, listen to their motivations, recognize their health goals within the context of their social circumstances, understand and honor their limits, and ultimately champion their capacity to make change in their own lives. -
Education And Professional Development Co-ChairCal Star Network Sep 2022 - PresentIn this role I direct the development of a Massive Open Online course on stress and resilience. My goal is to make stress education accessible to all people as a public health education initiative. This role is both creative and technical: I’ve added key elements to the syllabus, researched the best experts in each field and directed these speakers to film lecture videos on topics related to stress, health, and resilience. I initiated the diversification of speakers and sought out the suggestions of general lab members. Ultimately, we produced a roster of content experts with unique lived experiences and unmatched insight into their fields of research. -
Research Assistant CoordinatorCal Star Network May 2022 - Sep 2022In this position, I acted as the liaison between 5 research assistants and the lab manager. I was responsible for guiding them through assignments and providing structure/clarity to long-term projects. This experience allowed me to grow my delegation ability, hone my time management skills, learn how to initiate professional relationships, and communicate effectively. I’ve deeply enjoyed building individual relationships between myself and these team members, especially the ones I get to see in-person at the office! -
Family FarmerWeatherford-Harper Ranches Aug 2002 - PresentGilliam County, Oregon, United StatesI am a fifth-generation farmer and grew up spending my summers on my family ranch. We steward 10,000 acres of arable fields, range, and Conservation Reserve Program land. As a child I learned how to love the land and view myself as one part of a much larger ecosystem; as an adult I collaborate on business decisions, analyze global grain markets, and have been learning to operate and maintain my family farm in the face of large scale agricultural monopolization. I designed a sustainable permaculture program to implement on 150 acres of land, and am working with members of my family to adapt our farming practices to protect the integrity of our soil and water. My whole life I have been developing a personal connection to food production, passion for sustainable agriculture, love of local economies, and a commitment to ethical labor.

Medical AssistantSouth Gilliam Health Center May 2017 - Jul 2024I act as a medical assistant at the South Gilliam Health Center in rural Eastern Oregon. I check patients in, take vital signs, conduct blood glucose tests, and run INRs and strep tests under guidance of resident PAs. I speak with patients to build a medical history and develop a SOAP profile. I’m using this opportunity to develop the skills of a primary care provider, taking special care to make meaningful connections with the people who live in the small community surrounding the clinic. -
Research AssistantUcla Laboratory For Stress Assessment And Research May 2021 - Jun 2024As a research assistant I study the affects of psychosocial risk factors on morbidity, as well as the impact of medical mistrust on COVID-19 guideline adherence. I have screened 5,562 studies, developed proficiency in Covidence, and have contributed to the writing and publication of a journal article. I find meaning in this work because the study explores how social determinants—such as education, socioeconomic status, toxin exposure, race, etc.—directly impact human health. I'm thrilled to contribute to research with such important implications for the field of public health and our understanding of the social determinants of health.

Core OrganizerWestwood Food Cooperative Dec 2022 - May 2024My work with the Westwood Food Cooperative aimed to create an inclusive space to build community, and change our food system to be more ethical, nourishing, and sustainable. In this role I forged a connection to local farms, such as the John Givens Organic Farm, and packed weekly CSA boxes full of their fresh produce. I acted as a bridge between my peers at UCLA and local farmers by distribute the CSA boxes to individuals who otherwise couldn't have accessed the farmers markets. In this organization I also directed outreach and collaboration with other UCLA clubs, such as the Environmentalists of Color Collective, to host community-building events. We provided free food to those who needed or wanted it, and acted as a third space to allow individuals to make relationships with each other and their food system.
