MAELC is a 16-member Legislative Council established in 1997 to help invigorate agricultural education around Minnesota. We provide insight into issues surrounding agricultural education and rural development and also provide proactive solutions.We have awarded over $2 million in competitive grants and special project funding to help promote agricultural education across Minnesota. We have also awarded over $250,000 in college scholarships to students pursuing a degree in agricultural education at a post-secondary institution in Minnesota. We work closely with the University of Minnesota and Minnesota State Colleges & Universities on program and curriculum initiatives with their Farm Business Management students and their students studying agricultural educaiton.Accomplishments & Experience:-Doubled current budget by successfully lobbying Minnesota Legislature-Advise and respond to a 16-member legislative council with quarterly meetings and updates-Strategize statewide educational initiatives involving state and national partners-Create an inclusive environment for new and existing audiences-Coordinate statewide listening sessions & Summit to plan the future of agricultural education-Train educators on advocacy and public relations at the local and state level-Create relationships with policy makers and agribusiness leaders to advocate for agricultural education-Collaborate with agricultural organizations to develop positive messages about agriculture-Develop working relationships between suburban/urban schools and agricultural education-Negotiate solutions among legislators, constituencies and staff-Testify before standing committees of the Legislature as necessary

Teaching AFEE 5220: Special Topics - Agricultural Policy & Advocacy in MinnesotaStudents are having hands-on experiences involving agricultural policy in Minnesota. Field trips to the MN State Capitol, MN Dept of Agriculture, the Canadian Consulate are a part of this class as well as meeting with many professionals involved in ag policy. There are also various readings and group discussions on leadership, local organizing and lobbying. All students have to shadow a Legislator for a day and also follow a bill through session.Instructor for AFEE 3500 - International Field Study in Switzerland, Alpine Agriculture. In the class students develop a greater understanding of spring-time agricultural activities in a mountain ecosystem, understand the management of farming enterprises to be productive in the context of Europe, and also interact directly with farmers, researchers, students, professionals, and government officials who share expertise and interest in agricultural issues.

Extension Educator for 4-H Youth in Waseca County for almost three years and in Steele County for 1 year. Increased enrollment, volunteeer involvement and donor representation.Accomplishments & Experience:-Manage 4-H Community Club programs. Enrollment increased by 20% from 2000-2003-Coordinate event planning and management for events ranging from 5-1,200 participants-Write grant proposals and collaborate with potential contributors on community projects-Serve on Minnesota 4-H Foundation grant review committee-Manage 150 adult volunteers and develop innovative training to meet their needs-Collaborate with community on needs assessment of area youth programming-Develop and deliver positive out of school activities for two Hispanic and one Somali program-Ensure diversity and equal access for all youth and family audiences-Assist in monitoring and reporting impacts of 4-H youth development programs-Supervise Program Coordinators for 4-H programs
