I am 1 of 1,000 juveniles who were serving life without parole and released after the United States Supreme Court's ruling in Miller v. Alabama. I took my skills as a jailhouse lawyer, writ writer, self-development coach, and motivational speaker and transferred them over to a legal career upon release. I learned how to work remotely with collaboration technology during my time with the Eckert Law Firm. My time at Longwell Lawyers, under the direction of attorney David Redfearn, I was exposed to ascertaining and digesting records, and records/system management. I continue to learn the trade of records specialization from Felicia Sullivan who is not only my mentor, but also renowned in her field. My previous position with Fusion Law, P.A. is not only teaching me a different area of law, but I am learning more of the administrative/management aspects of law practice. My current work in the criminal law field consists of assisting attorneys with gaining rapport with their clients, preparing clients for allocution, informal meetings with the prosecution, interactions with victims and/or their family members, and client self development planning and preparation for transitioning. I have also had the privilege of testifying as an expert witness concerning prison culture. As I continue to learn and train in the area of litigation and mitigation I wish to bridge three worlds together: 1) the legal knowledge concerning criminal and court procedure of a paralegal; 2) the investigative and assessment skills of a mitigation specialist; and 3) the insight and knowledge of prison culture and procedure as only an ex-con can know it. I believe that these three elements will enhance the working parts of any legal team and raise the prospects of a just result for defendants within a process that is way too fragmented. I see my involvement in any case as an educational opportunity to inform and elucidate the process for client (to gain an understanding of the process itself, from the eyes of legal experts), legal teams (for an understanding of the mind of the accused), and the judiciary (for an understanding of the realities of institutional living and adjustment). As I continue my legal education, on the road towards law school, I am excited to discover where this road will lead and what I am able to contribute. VALE!
