My studies at the University of Chicago covered the range of Middle Eastern history and Islamic thought from the rise of Islam to the present. My research interests focused primarily on Syria's modern political history and contemporary Islamic political thought. Additionally, my duties as a PhD Candidate also included serving as a teaching assistant for language and content courses. During the spring quarter of 2017, I offered a stand-alone course entitled "History of Modern Syria" at the University of Chicago. This class functioned as a survey course of Syrian history and represents the integration and culmination of my academic and professional expertise on Syrian history and the current conflict.

This self-designed course, modeled off a joint operations center with regular situation updates in the form of student presentations, covered two aspects of modern Syrian history. The first being a historical overview of the major political trends in Syrian history from the 18th century (late Ottoman period) to the rise of Hafez al-Assad in the 1970s. The second portion of the course covered the history of the ongoing Syrian conflict from 2011 to 2017.

As the Senior Research Analyst the Chicago Project on Security and Threats (CPOST) I served as the lead analyst on a two-year project funded by the Office of Naval Research evaluating the effectiveness of current U.S. counterterrorism (CT) strategies that substitute U.S. troops for local ground allies and American air power. Through a quantitative and qualitative cross-case analysis of six CT campaigns in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan and Pakistan, CPOST’s research finds a strong link between gains and losses in a militant group’s territorial holdings and their attack strategy. I am currently co-authoring a book based off of this research with Dr. Robert Pape and Alexandra Greiwe.

At the U.S. Department of Defense I analyzed daily and long-term political and military trends across the Levant region of the Middle East generally and Syria specifically. My work involved extensive inter-agency coordination and collaboration on research projects, deployments to the Middle East, report writing and regular briefings to policymakers and senior U.S. and allied defense officials.
