I'm a lawyer based in Charleston, South Carolina. After about a decade in big law, I am now in a small partnership. My work is pretty varied. I am a "proctor in admiralty" and work in the areas of admiralty and maritime law, litigation and arbitration. My maritime practice overlaps into other areas of commercial law, particularly those involving international commerce and trade. Examples include the UN Conventional on the International Sale of Goods, Incoterms, and letters of credit. Although much of my practice involves disputes, I also advise clients on transactional matters relating to trade and maritime commerce.. Examples include international transactions in goods, ship charters, and ship-building and ship repair contracts. I enjoy the craft of brief-writing, and am happy to take on appellate work both within and without my main areas of interest. I am an avid boater, often found on the inland waters of the South Carolina Lowcountry, and handle boat-related transactions and disputes. I'm certified as a mediator in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina and am available to mediate disputes in the South Carolina region, particularly those involving maritime, business, commerce and trade issues.I'm an adjunct professor at the Charleston School of Law and teach courses like International Trade & Ocean Carriage and Marine Insurance. I was a Fulbright visitor to the Maritime Law Studies Unit of the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in Durban, South Africa in 2017 and maintain a connection with that institution.Although law is a business, I believe it is also a profession and a craft. I try not to lose sight of that in my practice.
