Phd
Research aim: Improve hardware utilization and efficiency of high-performance heterogeneous embedded systems (e.g. Odroid-XU4)During my PhD, I worked on improving the hardware utilization and efficiency of high-performance embedded systems (e.g. Nvidia Jetson Nano and Odroid-XU4). I worked in close collaboration with a team of another PhD, a Postdoc, and an Associate Professor. As a team, we developed an open-source toolbox for real-time scheduling and task-graph analysis in C++. To improve collaboration within the team I set up a Bitbucket build-and-test pipeline for the project. Within the toolbox, I specifically worked on adapting and extending heuristics, ILP formulations and Reinforcement Learning (PyTorch & PyTorch Geometric) methods for mapping and scheduling task graphs onto heterogeneous embedded systems. A major goal of the new scheduling techniques was to reduce the energy consumption of applications executed on the aforementioned platforms. As the team had little experience working with energy measurements and electrical engineering, I took it upon myself to learn basic electronics skills. With this knowledge, I developed a small-scale energy measurement system based on an Arduino (using C) and worked with various hardware development tools (Oscilloscope, Soldering etc.). Additionally, I developed short use-case applications for the Odroid-XU4 and Nvidia Jetson Nano. Lastly, the role required a great amount of data and statistical analysis using Numpy, Pandas and Scipy.
Visiting Researcher
I was awarded a personal grant to visit the University of Augsburg as a visiting researcher for three months. During my time in Augsburg I investigated the impact of the sampling frequency on the accuracy of energy measurements for high-performance embedded systems. Additionally, I planned and prepared a practical class on voltage fault injection techniques. During the class, the students used a Raspberry Pi to inject faults into an Arduino and read out a secret key that is otherwise not recoverable (Riscure Hack me 2 challenge).
