About Jun Li

I am currently an IIN Postdoctoral Fellow working with Prof. Chad A. Mirkin in the Department of Chemistry at Northwestern University (NU). My research at NU focuses on developing high throughput experimentation platforms for discovering new optical and electrical materials, and I have invented solid methods for synthesizing, characterizing, and screening millions of compositionally distinct functional nanocrystals. Prior to my time at Northwestern, I obtained my Ph.D. degree in materials science and engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) under the supervision of Prof. Xudong Wang. There, my research was centered on synthesis, manufacturing, and biomedical applications of electroactive biomaterials. My notable achievements were developing novel large-scale assembly approaches and inventing 3D printing strategies for piezoelectric biomaterials. I am currently looking for faculty positions in the north American regions that allow me to develop materials innovation platforms for the deliberate design and discovery of responsive biocrystals with unusual optical and electrical properties, and to use these new biomaterials to fabricate multi-functional biomimetic implantable systems for personalized healthcare applications. I aim to tackle some of the grand challenges in healthcare and sustainability.

At NU, I worked with Prof. Chad A. Mirkin as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Chemistry and the International Institute for Nanotechnology. In Mirkin Research Group, as a Materials Discovery subgroup leader, I have led a team of over 20 members working on developing high-throughput platforms that integrate experimentation and computation for accelerated discovery of functional material. I have also led and co-led multiple projects. Major ones include:1. High Throughput Synthesis and Screening of Non-Centrosymmetric Material Mega-libraries:2. I did a short 12-month postdoctoral training with my PhD advisor Prof. Xudong Wang. During this period, my research focused on the electroactive biomaterials design and innovation for battery-free implantable medical devices, particularly intracardiac devices. My main achievements include: 1. I developed a self-powered intracardiac device working on the principle of triboelectricity. This device can harvest the biomechanical energy from heart beating and convert it into electricity to either power the pacemaker without a battery or directly stimulate the heart.2. I also developed an amino acid-based piezoelectric biocrystal thin film that offers tissue-compatible omnidirectional stretchability. I demonstrated an implantable system integrating piezoelectricity, stretchability and biocompatibility, which is a critical step toward tissue-compatible functional biomedical devices.

At UW-Madison, I earned a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering under the supervision of Prof. Xudong Wang. My research was centered on the synthesis and manufacturing of electromechanical biomaterials for battery-free implantable bioelectronic applications. My major achievement include:1. I reported novel strategies for making large-scale electroactive bioorganic thin film. This work published in Science opens up potentials for implantable transient electromechanical devices.2. I have made breakthroughs in 3D printing ferroelectric materials and artificial biological systems. I developed ferroelectric composites for quickly in-situ poling and simultaneously printing responsive structures, and I invented an artificial artery for sensing real-time blood pressure and detecting partial occlusion ex vivo.3. I developed many types of battery-free biomedical devices for biomechanical energy harvesting, physiological sensing and electro-stimulating. These devices mainly include an ultra-stretchable micro-power supply harvesting in vivo energy from breath, an implantable cardiac system detecting ischemic heart attack, and electrical bandages accelerating wound healing.

I led the SRTP (Student Research Training Program) program with a small undergraduate team, and we worked in the Center of Electron Microscopy, at Zhejiang University under the supervision of Prof. Yong Wang. Our research project was "Controllable Synthesis of TiO2 Single Crystals with Dominant High Energy Facets". During this project, we developed N-doped rutile titania with novel curved surfaces and studied the growth mechanism of as-synthesized TiO2 Single Crystals. We published two papers as co-authors.
