At the age of 16, I was accepted into the OHSU program Partnership for Scientific Inquiry. Through that program, I learned about reading research papers, making presentations, and what researchers do for their career. As part of the program, I participated in a summer internship with a lab at the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center studying the connection between Hepatitis C, alcoholism, and mental health disorders where I learned about research and how to use a pipette. From there I went on to attend Oregon State University majoring in Biochemistry and Biophysics where I worked in the Perez laboratory studying cellular senescence in a mouse model of Alzheimers. Post gradation my life took a complete different direction of teaching English to elementary and junior high students in rural Japan, where I have been since fall 2021. As my English teaching program comes to a close, I am looking to apply to graduate school and further my knowledge and research of medical biochemistry.
