About Junwoo Hwang
I'm an undergraduate student at Korea university majoring in Electrical Engineering.Being an avid aerospace enthusiast, I started building model airplanes when I was 15. That passion led me to an Open-Source Flight control software called iNav. Where I contributed several bug fixes and code optimizations throughout highschool years. Currently, I'm a volunteer for PX4, which is a more widely known flight control software. I am especially interested and looking for ways to contribute in Visual obstacle avoidance and Safe landing features inside PX4.I am a self motivated, fast-paced learner. Through projects like 'Return glider radiosonde', 'High altitude long endurance solar airplane', 'Electrical skateboard', I learned so much about embedded systems, from designing a PCB to writing the code that utilizes low level features of a micro-processor like Timer and Interrupts. Seeing how the code performs in real life even if it's just blinking a led, is fascinating for me.My current interests include Flight control software, Vision based navigation, Rocket propulsion, Optimal trajectory planning algorithm for propulsively landing on planets, Autonomous high speed aerial vehicles, Embedded programmig and Coding in general.

Managing the PX4 Community & Developers by:- Helping release management- Structuring the developer / community roles- Creating a system to help the community doing flight testing reports- Bringing together development & volunteering efforts
Podcast Host
Started a podcast with a friend to interview aspiring/motivational students working on cool projects!
Px4 Flight Control Software Engineering Intern
First 3 months:- I was an intern for Dronecode, and extensively worked on the improved Follow-Me mode for PX4-Autopilot. Which significantly improved the follow behavior & enabled shooting cinematic videos tracking the subject precisely in the frame- Added follow-me feature support in MAVSDK, documentation on PX4 User Guide- Presented the project at the PX4 Dev Summit 2022 in Austin, Texas- Improved documentation for the Dynamic Control Allocation feature for the PX4 v1.13 release, including detailed how-tos & screenshotsNext 6 months:- I was directly working for Auterion Enterprise PX4, as well as open-source PX4-Autopilot- Implemented the Package Delivery feature (open-sourced in PX4-Autopilot), which allows Autonomous Missions to drop a package using a Gripper mechanism. Which was used for a project for the government program.- For this, implemented the whole internal vehicle command acknowledgment processing logic, a new module to handle the delivery feature, and a driver for the Gripper mechanism- Assisted in adding a native Qt bug that was returning the GPS altitude in a wrong frame of reference for Auterion Mission Control, which unblocked the release for the Remote ID support, which was required by the US Government.- Fixed numerous bugs and CI failures including wrong memory access in Remote ID protocol, MAVSDK SITL Tests, and many moreOverall:- Coordinated & ran the weekly PX4 developer call- Started the initiative to move PX4 community from Slack to Discord (due to old messages getting deleted with the free plan), and with other members successfully migrated the community to Discord! (PX4 has been using Slack for more than 5 years beforehand)
Lv Electronics & Software
Selected the wheel encoder model to use for tracking the position of the TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine), Organized team socialising event, Helped testing Electronics, Helped the Public Reveal Event of the machine.
Team Lead
Founded and led 4 member student group initially aiming to build a Turbo-jet engine, but later pivoted to the development of a personal Water propulsion unit.Successfully built and tested the prototype version after 2 months of development, and am developing the final version during January of 2021.Used Notion as a cooperation & data management tool and Discord as a communication medium.Successfully raised capital worth $4500 by getting selected in a number of University programs.
Electronics Lead
Spearheaded the software development for a Thrust Measurement System, contributing to the qualification of the team's motor for the entry of the "2019 NURA (National University Rocket Association) Rocketry Competition".Developed a parachute ejection electronics system.
Aerial Robotics Software Development Intern
Visual Helipad detector: I trained & modified a YOLO network model to run helipad detector based on monocular camera video on a drone with Nvidia Jetson onboard. With the accuracy of ~80%, it was used for the autonomous navigation challenge.VOXL integration: I worked on integrating ModalAI's VOXL1 on IFO-S drone platform. Troubleshooting issues in Yocto Linux system & Camera video streaming & Configuring visual odometry & etc. It was great to be able to test & learn about the early stage product of such cool startup out of Qualcomm!Indoor swarm drone system: Using motion capture system, I documented & implemented a setup with odometry data being transmitted to drones wirelessly to enable an indoor flight. I encountered problems in the network configuration, MAVSDK as well as using the motion capture software (and Quaternions!) but it was a good challenge.Apart from that there were small projects:- Helping out setting up drone light shows (with 300 units)- Running PX4 on a Rover platform (AION R1)- Battery SMBUS management system
