I successfully applied for an 8-week programme at Kinneir Dufort, a user-centred innovation consultancy based in Bristol, throughout my final year. I chose to apply for this programme to gain more insight into the design industry and learn from top design engineers in the field. Throughout my placement, I was able to observe professional design projects, shadow designers, and learn about design techniques which will be useful for my Final Year Design Project. As part of my placement at KD, I will be involved with school outreach programmes, talking to school children about my experiences learning design engineering in university and potential careers in design.

During summer before starting final year, I chose to volunteer my time to work with Dr Alborz Shokrani, to design an arm to hold a coolant nozzle for a CNC milling machine, and a container to hold a camera in a CNC machine. These projects would aid Dr Alborz's research. I chose to do these projects as an opportunity to improve my design for manufacture skills.I worked closely with university technicians by iterating designs, checking their manufacturing feasibility, sourcing components and creating engineering drawings. This experience gave me more confidence in my design skills, particularly in tolerances and understanding machining limitations.

In the Tennis Department of this sports technology firm, I operated the Electronic Line Calling system, used in refereeing major tennis tournaments. I worked at 9 international events in 7 countries, from the China Open to the Paris Masters and even the Australian Open Grand Slam. I learnt how to be highly adaptable to different working environments, constantly working with new teams at each tournament. By working in live sport, I learnt how to handle extreme pressure. I believe this experience improved my work ethic and efficiency which I brought back into my university work.

To gain practical engineering experience outside the classroom, I took the initiative to join the university's Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) competition team. In a team, I brainstormed the drone's chassis design and propulsion system arrangement. I manufactured the chassis, which gave me valuable practical engineering experience.In addition, I volunteered to be the team's Publicity officer, being responsible its Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn pages. I updated the pages with milestones in the drone's development with the end goal of attracting new members to the team. This experience taught me the basics of social media management and how to engage followers online.

I interned with Gamuda's Product Management Unit. My responsibilities included reviewing mechanical and electrical systems in high-rise buildings and learning various aspects of HVAC (Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems. I learnt to have a diligent attention to detail, to prevent overlooking small mistakes in schematics.
