I am always interested in architectural related social-political issues and my thesis during undergraduate is compare the social-political aspects of urban village and slums. Based on individual thesis report and intensive two weeks research and discussion on site. we were 8 people in the team doing research on traditional catering and dimsum culture in the Nantou Old Town, where the Biennal was based. The PRD Region with its increasing rural-to-urban migration, new industries, and other physical and social infrastructural growth is accompanied by exactly the kind of messiness that a designer should dedicate attention to. Amongst this rapid urbanisation, many urban villages remained. These are old parts of the city that are relatively un-planned. Official planning agencies see them as embodying chaos,anarchy, and informality that must be tamed. They are thus often beautified or even demolished in the name of progress. As the theme "Cities, Grow in Difference" represents not only a critical interpretation of the current urbanization in today's China and the world but also an aim to envision alternative models of future cities. This is closely followed by my undergraduate essay and thesis, which are about the existence of urban village in the background of developed cities, and the promotion and side effect of intensive multi-functional development of urban complex.
