Using a community-organizing approach, I work to mobilize support for human rights with a special focus on challenging racism, discrimination, and colonialism. My main areas of expertise include communications, strategic partnerships, and program development.As Director of Research & Strategic Partnerships with First Light St. John's Friendship Centre, I lead the organization's political advocacy efforts while also working to support the public policy research that is needed to promote systemic change that benefits the urban Indigenous community in St. John's. This work has included overseeing the development and implementation of a Research Policy Framework to ensure the ethical conduct of research that implicates First Light as an organization. It also involves translating the results of such research into political action and public policy advice to all levels of government.My political advocacy work on behalf of First Light takes place primarily through First Voice, a coalition of Indigenous Peoples, service providers, and all levels of government working together to promote truth and reconciliation in St. John's and across Newfoundland and Labrador. Founded in 2019, the coalition undertook more than three years of sustained engagement with constituencies that included grassroots community members, nonprofit organizations, academics, and stakeholders and allies in government. The final result of these efforts is a community action plan that was released in early 2023. Entitled "Our Shared Vision," it articulates 42 Calls for Change to promote systemic change inspired by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls' 231 Calls for Justice, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.Professionally fluent in English and French, I’m CQ Certified by the US-based Cultural Intelligence Center and hold a Bachelor of Humanities (B.Hum) in Human Rights and a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Political Science, both from Carleton University in Ottawa.

Coalition CoordinatorFirst Light: St. John'S Friendship Centre May 2019 - Aug 2020St. John'S, Newfoundland And LabradorOne of more than 100 Friendship Centres across Canada serving the urban Indigenous community, First Light provides a full range of programs and services rooted in the revitalization, strengthening, and celebration of Indigenous cultures and languages. I joined the organization in the spring of 2019, just as the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) was releasing its final report calling for sweeping action to address Canada’s ongoing legacy of colonial violence. My role focused on advocacy, policy development, and partnership-building.Drawing on the National Inquiry's Calls for Justice, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), I launched First Voice as a new urban Indigenous coalition in St. John’s. Bringing together Indigenous Peoples, service providers, and all levels of government within the framework of a multi-stakeholder network, First Voice works to challenge colonialism at the local level and thus advance the promise of truth and reconciliation.My major achievements as Coordinator of First Voice include formalizing a core group of organizational partners to lead the project under the auspices of the Partnership Table; developing a sub-brand for the project that aligns with First Light’s overall brand identity; creating and presenting the inaugural Indigenous Advocate Award; launching and maintaining a new project website at www.firstvoicenl.ca; and laying the groundwork for the development of a collaborative Community Action Plan, which is set to be unveiled in early 2021.After just over a year in the role, in the summer of 2020 I was promoted to the position of Manager of Research and Advocacy Programs. I continue to chair and coordinate First Voice while also representing Newfoundland and Labrador on the governing council of the National Urban Indigenous Coalition, a pan-Canadian policy and advocacy group.

Diversity Outreach CoordinatorAssociation For New Canadians Jul 2016 - May 2019St. John'S, Newfoundland And LabradorThe Association for New Canadians (ANC) is a non-profit, community-based settlement agency with offices across Newfoundland and Labrador. I joined the organization in 2016 during Canada's effort to resettle more than 40,000 Syrian refugees, when the ANC was welcoming more than three times its annual number of government-assisted and privately-sponsored refugees. As the ANC’s public education lead, I built partnerships with organizations from St. John’s to Labrador City to spread awareness about the value of immigration and to fight discrimination against refugees and other racialized groups in their neighbourhoods, classrooms, and places of work.During my first year on the job, I adopted a broadly collaborative approach to identify areas where stronger settlement and anti-racism supports were needed, and then worked to develop successful program proposals to secure the necessary funding to launch several new initiatives. In 2016-17, for example, I organized a series of roundtable events that engaged business leaders in eight communities across Newfoundland and Labrador to talk about the causes of discrimination in the workplace and to brainstorm solutions. The resulting Cultural Competency Toolkit for Businesses, a set of five workshops plus takeaway resources, is now delivered more than 50 times each year in communities throughout the province.In my three years at the ANC, I grew the Diversity Outreach Team from two to five members and created specialized roles on my team to conduct research and content development; to facilitate discussions on cultural diversity in the public school system; and to promote anti-racism, diversity, and inclusion among the business community. In addition to my regular duties, I also frequently served as a spokesperson for the organization during media interviews, provincial and national conferences, and guest lectures at Memorial University of Newfoundland and the College of the North Atlantic. -

It also organizes Canada’s largest multi-disciplinary gathering of scholars, the annual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. During my tenure as Stakeholder Relations Officer, my chief responsibility was to coordinate with presidents and other senior representatives of all 165 member universities, colleges, and scholarly associations to organize a national community promoting research and teaching for the advancement of an inclusive, democratic, and prosperous society.Given the diversity of the Federation’s membership, much of my work focused on building broad-based coalitions around sometimes controversial policy positions. At the same time, it was crucial to ensure the genuine responsiveness of the secretariat to individual members’ specific priorities and concerns. To facilitate this kind of consensus-building, I modernized the Federation’s membership management system, established clear benchmarks to measure member engagement, and then developed and implemented a new member communications strategy. As a result, it dramatically improved customer satisfaction, reduced service delivery lead times, and saved the company hundreds of thousands of dollars in operational costs.
