I led the first composite plant project in North Brazil (Vale/MOP). The turnkey project entailed installing of the eletrocenters(e-House/Secondary Substation),medium and low voltage equipment and also project management,system engineering,installation supervision,commissioning,start-up,planning (MSProject)and training. I made high demands on the project management and engineering teams with its complex logistics, including the nickel plant’s remote location. With careful balance of flexibility and strict change management practices generated additional orders which placed the contract’s value at $101million, more than quadrupling the original contract value and significantly improving its margin. I led the creation of the first Intelligent Operation Center(Vale/CIO)at their iron ore mine in the North Brazil. The large EPC project aimed to increase efficiency by creating an infrastructure to integrate the control and monitoring of the mine’s operations. Information from all aspects of the mine including maintenance,production scheduling,process analysis,quality and logistics-would be monitored on an overview screen so that fast, informed decisions could be made from a single control room. The scope of the project was huge, ranging from the design of the vast new buildings and their room layouts,to the installation of the automation platform and information management systems,system engineering, software solution planning and training.The timescales were tight and I,an integral part of their project management group, was involved in everything from budget decisions to managing the support functions to ensuring the safety of workforce and project result. The project was fully operational in just three months, a feat which led to a three-year Lifecycle Service contract for maintenance and operation support for the entire ABB scope, with a contract value of $10 million.
