Profile bio

About Justice Flora

I come from an area where many students do not have the opportunity to learn about and use technology at an elevated level nor are they introduced to STEM-related fields as a potential career choice in the future. While I may be an exception to this situation, according to the Washington Post in April of 2020, 30 percent or 52,000 of D.C. public school students lack Internet access, an alarming statistic exposed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many students struggled to take part in virtual learning because they lack the access and resources needed to engage with learning in this format. With an engineering degree and experience in the field, I would like to create a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching youth in STEM-related fields in the Washington-Metropolitan area in the next ten to fifteen years after obtaining my degrees and career. I would distribute personal funds, take part in grassroots fundraising, compete for grants, and use my community's support to create programs, camps, and engaging events that encourage students to pursue a STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) career. I would also seek out STEM-based companies' partnerships to develop a pipeline for students to enter STEM careers. Thus far, I have gotten support from my parents, teachers, friends, and local community towards my future goal, and I learned that I have a deep passion for giving back to my community and helping others in need. I have personally met a lack of technology equipment, robotic kits, outdated computers, and mentors while taking part in many local STEM programs which have supplied great experiences and opportunities. With my organization, I would distribute the proper time and resources in creating programs, camps and engaging informational events that encourage students to pursue a career in STEM. It would also include access to a collection of STEM-related guides, access to career mentors to give advice and answer questions related to their profession, and even the ability to access a facility with the newest forms of technology, including a place to study while working on projects. While this organization is a dream right now, I am confident that with an engineering degree and experience I would be able to turn my dream into a reality. I believe my dedication to giving back and passion in regards to engineering and my community sets me apart from other engineers. Many people are not willing to make the sacrifices and devote the time to help ensure a better future for everyone.
