Lead engineer for FloDrift/FloSurvey product line and sustaining engineer for BlackStar II MWD project. Responsibilities/accomplishments:- Led the design of the electronics and managed software improvements for the successful launch of the FloSurvey inclination-and-azimuth measurement tool in 2013/2014. On the electronics side, I reverse-engineered and redesigned the hardware and firmware for several PCBA's from the legacy FloDrift tool to create the new FloSurvey tool. On the software side, I directed the revamp of the user interface (with help from external contractors), tracked down and fixed bugs in the code, and led translation/localization efforts to facilitate product expansion into China and South America.- Collaborate with field engineers, customers, manufacturers, and suppliers to address tool operations issues. Create failure analysis reports and implement changes to procedures/software/hardware when necessary.- Redesigned several PCBA's for the BlackStar Measurement-While-Drilling tool to address reliability and manufacturing concerns. Currently working on a complete redesign of a BPSK receiver board to allow EM communication at greater depths downhole.- Mentored several junior EE's in real-life engineering best practices. Specifically, I took charge of training a broad range of concepts such component screening, schematic/layout design, coding best practices, and how to conduct technical presentations and design review meetings. For each student I assigned real-life projects to reinforce the training. I take a lot of pride in helping young engineers bridge the huge gap between college and the real world!
  • National Instruments
    Electrical Engineer
    National Instruments Sep 2011 - Feb 2013
Hardware sustaining engineer. Redesigned test & measurement electronics for cost reductions and EOL component replacement. Highlights:- Led the revamp of a 90's-era motion control product with an obsolete FPGA and virtually zero available documentation: Successfully reverse-engineered and redesigned the electronics with a new FPGA, ADC, and DAC. Required a complete overhaul of the FPGA firmware (in VHDL) and manufacturing test software (in LabView) to meet strict NI reliability standards. Product life was extended 5+ years without any interruptions to customer orders.- Performed extensive specification testing (crosstalk, impedance, bandwidth, isolation resistance, etc.) for PXI switch products and implemented layout changes to address some deficiencies.- Completed 8-week intensive (60 hour/week) digital design best practices class upon starting at NI; received extensive training in VHDL coding, testbench design, and timing constraints, with heavy emphasis on real-life design issues that aren't taught in textbooks. This training turned out to be crucial for my role in replacing the end-of-life FPGA in the motion control product.- Beyond technical skills, I learned a lot about best practices for creating a great technical work environment like NI is known for. The culture promoted a flat management structure, open communications from management, extensive employee training, and clear career paths - and these are concepts I would like to help implement in future roles.
  • Baker Hughes
    Electrical Design Engineer
    Baker Hughes Jun 2005 - Nov 2011
    Houston, Texas, Us
Design and test electronics for oilfield service equipment. Highlights:2010/2011: Lead electrical engineer for highest-priority project in MWD research division. Created complete data acquisition prototype system from scratch in less than one year, including: Schematic and layout for pre-amp/filter board, acquisition DSP board, and master telemetry board; FPGA firmware (VHDL) for all 3 boards; and simple PC software (C#) to control the tool and process data.2010: Designed acquisition electronics for 30,000 ft wireline telemetry OFDM modem. Also assisted with DSP firmware development and high-temp component screening.2009: Led development of new battery-powered seismic survey tool. Collaborated with teams in Germany, India, Houston, and Austin to simply system architecture, fix several PCBA design issues, and develop user interface software. Designed an Ethernet-based surface control panel using an Altera FPGA with an embedded NIOS processor. Ran a successful field test with the complete system within 10 months of leading the project.2008: Created a seismic signal acquisition VME card to replace an older design with several obsolete components. Responsible for analog and digital component screening, schematics, layout, communication driver logic in VHDL, and processor operation code in C.2007: Successfully developed a super-stable (<1 msec drift over 36 hours) high-temp downhole clock for use in seismic tools.2006: Designed a CE-certified seismic source simulator panel for testing surface equipment. Also designed acceleration measurement and amplifier boards for downhole seismic tools.
