I work across EMBL-EBI to create and drive implementation of the strategy that will fully integrate our cloud and data services with the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). I co-ordinate our technical work with international organizations such as ELIXIR and GA4GH amongst other research infrastructures, research organizations and programmes.

I lead a software development team working on the Data Coordination Platform (DCP) for the Human Cell Atlas (https://www.humancellatlas.org/), a project to create comprehensive reference maps of all human cells. The DCP will be a sustainable petabyte scale platform to manage and use biological data in the cloud. This is in conjunction with organizations such as the Broad Institute and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.I handle strategic issues for the team and lead development of the technical architecture to achieve our requirements, particularly those of system scalability and reliability. The architecture is based on message queues and microservices running in AWS and GCP, with the latter written in Python, Java and Javascript. I also line manage the team (5-6 developers) members and ensure that we are using agile and responsive development processes. Finally, I help mentor and grow the skills of my developers, acting as a software development manager.Outside of software development and team management, I coordinate with the other institutes in our consortium and represent the team at project meetings and international conferences.

Technical coordinator for the UK node of ELIXIR, the European research infrastructure that coordinates, integrates and sustains bioinformatics resources across its member states. The UK node currently has 15 member organizations, including Imperial College and the universities of Cambridge and Oxford.As technical coordinator, I help member organizations and others integrate their bioinformatics resources with the technical services offered by other groups within ELIXIR, such as common infrastructure to perform researcher authentication and authorization, cross-resource bioinformatics workflow languages and data interoperability standards. I also help member organizations deal with the technical aspects of incoming requirements such as the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) regulation.I represent ELIXIR UK on technical committees in the broader ELIXIR organization, and give strategic input into organization issues and funding applications. I'm also a member of the ELIXIR UK management committee responsible for the day to day operation of the node (http://www.elixiruknode.org/elementor-219).

Architect of SynBioMine, a data integration warehouse for synthetic biology. This is part of the UK Government's Flowers Consortium (http://www.synbiuk.org/).Did the bulk of proposal writing for 2 successful grants to the Wellcome Trust and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), covering 5.5 people for 3/4 years.Architected solutions in RDF and graph databases to join InterMine up with other life science databases.I set development goals for SynBioMine in conjunction with academic and engineering members of the consortium, and promote it to other members of the consortium and external parties, along with its parent data integration project InterMine.I'm also engaged in:* Life sciences software architecture.* Funding proposal writing to UK and international funding bodies. Operated my own consultancy in the field of open-source 3D virtual environments.Negotiated and performed short and long-term contracts with organizations including Intel, Sandia National Labs, McMaster University and Wright-Patterson US Air Force Base. Also consulted with smaller organizations, startups and both for-profit and non-profit organizations.Managed and developed OpenSimulator, a large (>500 KLOC) C# .NET open-source codebase that implements a distributed multi-threaded server system on the Windows, Linux and Mac OSX platforms. This provides the backend for a large scale virtual environment.Developed persistence/exchange formats, performance testing and capture tools.Improved scalability and reliability of the system, wrote automated tests and fixed bugs across the entire codebase.Acted as project release manager from Dec 2009 to March 2015.Co-ordinated the work of open-source paid and volunteer developers, testers, documentation writers and users.Gave conference presentations and podcast interviews.Helped produce an online conference for the OpenSimulator project held in the OpenSimulator 3D environment itself, in co-operation with third party organizations. I was a technical leader of the open source OpenSimulator project. This means that I had direct access to make changes to the codebase and that I took part in the project's policy decisions.As a technical leader in the project, I engineered over 10 releases and liaised with third parties such as Intel and IBM as well as open source contributors on all aspects of the project. These ranged from distributed system and component-level architectural decisions through to security concerns, project culture and processes, and code contribution review and acceptance.

I was the co-chair of the very first OpenSimulator Community Conference (in 2013) and the research and development track lead of the 2013 and 2014 conferences. This conference is a pure online event hosted by the OpenSimulator software itself. As co-chair I played a critical role in establishing and nurturing the new relationship between the two organizations producing the conference (Avacon and Overte), as well as performing numerous high-level tasks such as pursuing sponsorship and organizing panel discussions.I was also lead of the technical team for the event. In this role I made considerable performance and functional improvements to the OpenSimulator software, especially in terms of load testing and gathering performance data for later replay and analysis.

Developer for IBM InfoSphere Master Data Management Server and WebSphere Product Center (WPC). These J2EE middleware applications act as a single source of domain data (e.g. customers, products) for other systems in the enterprise.Made visits to customers (e.g. Heinz) and other IBM sites (e.g. Burlingame, California) in development and critical troubleshooting roles.Led the design and development of a Java API for WPC.Part of the team that integrated WPC tooling into Eclipse.Developer for a new Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) messaging middleware component for IBM's J2EE WebSphere Application Server.Responsible for designing and developing message expiry mechanisms, statistics gathering and error semantics on message corruption.
