I have been working in technology since 1999. I started with front-end web development and soon took over all internal tools development at my first job. I quickly learned the skills necessary to work on the back end and database. Before the big cloud providers were around (AWS, Azure, GCP) I mostly worked in Microsoft technologies (VB, tSQL, VB.NET and a little C#). I dug deeper into MS SQL Server and learned advanced tuning techniques using system views, profiler, and query plans. I have also delved into management and security of database systems. I have worked on massive RDBMS architectures with petabyte amounts of data distributed across thousands of databases on hundreds of servers. I wrote Windows applications and services to assist in moving data and running distributed queries.In mid-2010 I began working on a small team with open source technologies in the AWS cloud. I learned Python, PostgreSQL, and Linux and Bash. I worked with the Pylons/Pyramid web framework on the back end and jQuery, JavaScript, CSS, and HTML on the front end. I set up a SOLR search server and dipped my toes into Java development to normalize the SOLR logging with the web server log format.Since around 2013 I have been mostly working as a data engineer. I had a brief contract job as a Business Intelligence developer working on configuring and upgrading Pentaho as well as developing ETLs, extracting from SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and Hive. My next job had me learning Scala and Cascading to create Map Reduce jobs for various ETL processes. I also developed a custom BI tool in R using Shiny, as well as standard HTML, CSS, and JavaScript; it was backed by PostgreSQL as well as Impala. And my current job has me creating and upkeeping Python services and APIs on AWS to get data into our Data Lake and Warehouse (S3 and Snowflake) as well as configuring our Looker environment. And occasionally I will work on Ruby on Rails admin tools.And, of course, through much of my career I have worked with source control solutions such as git, SVN, and Mercurial; project management software such as Jira; continuous integration solutions like Circle CI and Jenkins; and am familiar with Agile development.
