After a 4 year adventure of the wilds of teaching in a middle school and high school, my wife and I choose to pursue an interest of mine for many years, dive into cybersecurity. As a teacher, I had multiple responsibilities with students account management, student - teacher confidentiality, HIPAA, and more. There were nights teachers were required to reach out via email to every parent and update them on their child's progress but I would cheat and write a program to send personalized emails out to all the parents. The program would use correct pronouns for the students and inform the parents which assignments were missing or which tests should be retaken. on average, 75% of parents would respond thinking that I actually typed up the email myself (which, if I wrote the program, then technically I did, didn't I?). Never once did a parent write back thinking that it was a program which I wrote. In fact, once a parent contact the principle of the school after receiving on of the emails expressing how grateful she was for the time I would take to keep the parent updated because they had never had another teacher take the time to do that before. Since starting the masters program, I have been generating leads and doing occasional estimates for a local fencing company part time.About a month before I was planned to graduate, my father who lives close by called me on morning asking me to help him build a house for a friend. While it did push back graduation an extra month, I wouldn't ever have been able to make up the time I was able to spend with my father building a house from the ground up.
