Justin Rehm is a Staff Software Engineer at Trimble at Viewpoint Construction Software. When I became a manager of a greenfield team a short time later, Cody was the first member of that team. There he played a significant role in driving innovations that put our small and relatively unknown team at the technological forefront of the company. Chiefly at the time, these were innovations with automated testing, deployment and hosting using Kubernetes, and emitting data using Kafka. Over the subsequent years, use of Kubernetes and Kafka spread throughout the other development teams and transformed our company's development and deployment paradigms, including eventually bringing together a new team of Ops specialists to own these in production. His ideas for automated testing deeply inspired me such that this became a passionate pursuit of my own in the years that followed, and our team was known by QA leadership to be key innovators in this area. Meanwhile, Cody continued identifying tools and technologies to better carry us forward, such as switching from C# to Go for most new services, and collaborating with our security architect to bring in Open Policy Agent. My observation as the manager was that Go had a significantly positive effect on our velocity, and the team learned it easily. Cody's Viewpoint authorization system design based on OPA became a template for a new Trimble-wide authorization system. Without a doubt, Cody's technical leadership was a key ingredient in the success of all of these initiatives. Cody has a willingness to embrace new learning curves, and an ability to scale them, like few people I've known, and he pairs this with an ample willingness to invest in the growth of others. He invests in his own growth, driving himself through study and observation in both technical skills and professional aptitudes. He's teachable and open to feedback (and gracious when I misunderstand a situation). He was my team's key technical leader and mentor for nearly all the 6+ years he worked on my team. He's passionate about making sure that team members don't remain content with black boxes, and instead encourages exploration and deep familiarity. He speaks highly of software engineering as a professional craft, and has developed his perspective on both the art and science of it. Cody gets along well with virtually everyone; I've observed him navigating a few different tricky relationships and he does so peaceably and with understanding.
