As a graduate student and currently as a postdoctoral fellow, I have been working on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. ATLAS and other experiments at the LHC are attempting to replicate the conditions a split second after big bang by colliding protons at speeds near the speed of light. Phenomenon that we are searching for occur infrequently--less than 1/billion occurrences. Thus, we must deal with large datasets. My experiences have included: writing event reconstruction and analysis software in c++/python, leading multiple physics analyses resulting in publications, grid computing, guiding graduate students, statistics, multivariate discriminants.
