I was appointed by Mayor Walsh as interim leader of the Department of Innovation and Technology, the City of Boston’s enterprise IT agency, with a team of 135 professionals dedicated to using technology as a tool to transform the business of government. In the Mayor's first 100 days, we launched several high-profile tech projects. We led an enterprise-wide Mayor's dashboard initiative focused on data-driven decision making and increased investments to core business applications. We launched “Wicked Free Wi-Fi,” Boston’s public wireless network, a mesh network of wireless hotspots set to scale across the city’s neighborhoods and we kicked off a multi-year project to substantially expand the city’s fiber optic network. We created new digital team to increase focus on digital media, services and engagement. We developed a new open data policy, opening city to further partnerships with developers, academics and constituents. And we created the City Hall greeters program, a low-tech answer to making the experience of doing business at City Hall more welcoming and accessible. I also served as a member of the Mayor’s cabinet.

Mayor Menino asked me to join his administration to solve a big challenge – to turn-around the way Boston serves its customers. In a new role that serves as the city's chief customer officer, we more than doubled overall engagement by introducing new interactive, mobile and social channels. We grew and strengthened a 24-hour call center and increased constituent satisfaction, now boasting an 89% net promoter rate. We improved service delivery through a citywide performance management strategy, paired with new mobile work order management tools and business process improvements. Today, one-third of all services requested by constituents are resolved in less than one day. Boston leads cities nationally in its approach to constituent-centric service, firmly cementing Mayor Menino's legacy as an urban mechanic.

At the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, I helped to develop a campaign for the expansion of the largest building in New England, together with related hotel development and destination improvements. I also coordinated several special projects for the director, including the development of a broad-based stakeholder group, the Convention Partnership. I developed and managed relationships with federal, state and local leaders and advocated authority’s position on major policy issues, including tourism, pharmaceutical marketing, casinos and state budget reforms.

As the top City Hall aide to the president of Boston's legislative body, I oversaw all external communications including media relations, speech writing, talking points and major correspondence. I directed the president's policy agenda, including research and legislative drafting in areas such as education, public safety and economic development. I worked with with agencies, department heads, elected officials and staff at local, state and national levels and led the staff team responsible for inaugural Boston Civic Summit, a first-of-its-kind professional conference for Boston’s community leaders.

As the first communications director in for New England's largest secondary school, founded in 1863, I developed and implemented a strategic communications plan to better serve the schools diverse stakeholder groups. I increased media exposure and managed crisis communications, developed and implemented media plans for major announcements, redesigned the school's alumni magazine (circ 16,000), redeveloped the web site including an interactive portal, led community and government relations efforts and developed the branding for a successful $40 million capital campaign.

My role was to help tell the stories of thousands of members of the Franciscan Order advocating for human rights around the world. Working with the United Nations accredited NGO, I helped to develop a global communications plan which included a newsletter produced in nine languages, a redesigned website, major policy reports, web-based e-newsletters and media outreach.
