Unfortunately, me & jet aviation was like a square peg in a round hole, so while at Oceana, the Navy agreed with my request for a redesignation - enter Engineering Duty Officer.Through the whole experience, I gained experience in general/military aviation, tactical aviation, flight ops, as well as various aviation related systems: thermal imagers, NVGs, laser designators, radio comms gear, etc...• Over 522 flight/simulator hours• Carrier Qualified in the T-45 Goshawk, VT-7, NAS Meridian• Conducted Strike Fighter training, VFA-106, NAS Oceana• Trained in practical aerodynamics, aircraft control systems, & weapon/sensor systems• Hands-on experience with advanced flight control systems & weapon system components (IMUs, GPS-INS, RF comms gear, etc…)

Planned & executed repairs and modernization in assigned key areas of the budget-constrained $1.2Bn aircraft carrier (Harry S Truman) overhaul. Major Accomplishments:• Completed 14,000+ work line-items, supervising efforts of, & collaborating between, 30+ work managers and their employees (total # employees involved ~ 3,000). • Rescued a failing shipboard remediation effort, recovering over 1 month schedule in the restoration of 70+ shipboard spaces. Major Accomplishments:1) Commissioned first-of vacuum test lab conducting first-of research & testing of laser cathodes. 2) Actually succeeded in accomplishing experimental goals for a cutting-edge laser photocathode. My primary task was to earn a MS in Applied Physics (a.k.a. - "Combat Systems Science & Technologies"). I chose to involve myself in the Free Electron Laser thesis group, as I saw the opportunity to impact a new technology the Navy, at that time, was seriously looking at to help address the evolving nature of the threats we face as a nation.I spent the better part of two years designing & redesigning various vacuum chambers to test various characteristics of both established & experimental cathodes (the "spark" that starts the laser).Also gained experience in computer modeling & simulation (Matlab, C/C++), modeling & simulation, lab experimental design, data processing and analysis, sensor integration/implementation, etc...
