Popperi was a short-lived startup that was ill-timed with the pandemic. Our big idea was to catalyze vibrant neighborhoods through bottom-up, community-centered small retail. Independent merchants could book space for their popup shops, on-demand using our marketplace. We partnered with vibrant places like breweries and building lobbies to create opportunities for makers to connect with the community and sell their work.

Designed, developed, tested, and deployed an experimental Android app called Journeys & Notes, that envisioned a social network for connecting travelers on the go, kind of like Foursquare, but for the journey instead of the destination.This research contributed to our understanding of how communities develop around physical spaces, as it blurred the boundaries between the digital and the physical, and between the present and the past in how social places take shape.

I contributed early research and technology towards the company's founding, as a member of the Carnegie Mellon anti-phishing research team through tech transfer. This included email filter technologies for detecting phishing emails and research on the effectiveness of email training campaigns at promoting phishing awareness in organizations. As one of the company's first consultants, I worked to integrate these technologies and insights into the product, and helped secure a Department of Defense SBIR grant to enable machine learning R&D efforts across multiple products.
