Justine Mertz, Ph.D. Email and Phone Number
I am a post-doctoral fellow in sign language linguistics, and I am particularly interested in the phonetic, phonological and psycholinguistic mechanisms underlying sign formation. I mainly study French Sign Language (LSF), the sign language used by the majority of Deaf signers in France. I am currently working on the project Lang'Action with Dr. Charlotte Hauser. Lang'Action is a research outreach project whose goal is to develop a diagnostic tool for language disorders in LSF so that speech therapists can make an informed diagnosis for signers. These tests have been developed within the Sign-Hub, a European research project, and our goal is to make these tests accessible to professionals so that Deaf signers with language disorders can be treated quickly, in the same way as hearing people. At the same time, we are building workshops on sign language that will be offered to companies for training and advice on awareness of deafness and accessibility for Deaf people.

Phd StudentUniversité Paris Cité Sep 2018 - May 2022Paris, FranceI did my PhD in sign language linguistics and my thesis project focused on the phonology of French Sign Language (LSF). My research work allowed me to identify the phonological mechanisms involved in the complexity of signs in LSF, to adapt existing phonological models to extend their scope to other languages such as LSF, and to deepen our knowledge of the psychological mechanisms underlying the perception of signs (categorical perception) and the notion of contrast in the visual-gestural modality. My work was based on an empirical approach, in a framework that was both theoretical (formal phonology) and experimental (psycholinguistics). -- I worked on this project under the supervision of Carlo Geraci (Institut Jean Nicod, École Normale Supérieure) and Giuseppina Turco (Laboratoire de Linguistique Formelle, Univ. Paris Cité). -

Visiting Phd StudentUniversity Of Chicago Oct 2019 - Mar 2020Région De Chicago, États-UnisProf. Diane Brentari invited me to work with her and her research team at the University of Chicago, in the Linguistic Department. We work together on sign language phonology and more particularly we develop a part of her theoretical model (Brentari, 1998). -
Research AssistantÉcole Normale Supérieure Jan 2018 - Sep 2018Paris, FranceI was research assistant in the sign language team directed by Carlo Geraci (Institut Jean Nicod, École Normale Supérieure). I participated to the project "Sign Language History" and created the project website. I was also implicated in other expriments in the team, and I participated to intensive LSF classes and the LINGUAE seminars (IJN, ENS). -
Volunteer Research AssistantInkawu Vervet Project Mar 2017 - Sep 2017South AfricaDuring the second semester of my break year, I participated to the research project "Inkawu Vervet Project" (IVP) in South Africa. As a volunteer, I was working on the field to collect behavioral data of wild vervet monkeys. I also assisted Ph.D. students and post-docs in many experiments on vervets social cognition and social transmission, and gestural and vocal communication, while also being in charge of the project equipment and the processing of organic samples.

InternIcm - Brain & Spine Institute Oct 2016 - Mar 2017Paris, FranceAfter the second year of my master degree, I decided to take a break year. During the first semester, I completed two research internships, including one in neurolinguistics at the Brain and Spine Institute (ICM) under the direction of Antoni Valéro-Cabre. I held a position of research assistant, mainly participating to the elaboration of an EEG experiment on patients with primary progressive aphasia. I also participated to TMS experiments, and I contributed to the writing of a literature review about the effects of non-invasive brain stimulation in neurodegenerative diseases. -
InternUniversité Paris Diderot Oct 2016 - Mar 2017Paris, FranceAfter the second year of my master degree, I decided to take a break year. During the first semester, I completed two research internships, including one in psycholinguistics at the Laboratoire de Linguistique Formelle (LLF, Univ. Paris Diderot) under the direction of Barbara Hemforth and Pascal Amsili. Together we conducted an experiment on biais in implicit causality in French verbs. I coded the experiment, and we posted it online to get participants, and I formated the data we collected. -
InternIcm - Brain & Spine Institute Sep 2015 - Aug 2016Paris, FranceDuring my master degree (M2) I worked on behavioral data from a large cohort of patients with Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA), under the direction of Dr Marc Teichmann (FrontLab, ICM). I investigated the processing and cortical implementation of reading and writing in the three main variants of PPA : I conducted an analysis of reading and writing data from PPA patients, correlated with psycholinguistic and cortical (anatomical MRI) data, in order to identify the underlying mechanisms of the behavioral disorders observed. A scientific paper, currently in progress, will be published to share our results. -
InternIcm - Brain & Spine Institute Jan 2015 - Sep 2015Paris, FranceDuring the first year of my master degree (M1), I completed a bibliographical internship entilted "Lexical components in Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA)" under the direction of Dr Marc Teichmann (FrontLab, ICM).
