The Senior Manager, Animal Care and Conservation – Melbourne Zoo, is to work with the Melbourne Zoo Director and Senior Leadership Team to develop the property, safely and efficiently manage daily operations, and to innovatively create a world leading conservation environment at Melbourne Zoo. The position is responsible for the care and welfare over over 5000 animals and over 100 staff members.This position is responsible to:• Deliver a professional species plan and management program to the highest standards of animal welfare in line with an overarching mission of being a leading zoo based conservation organisation. • High quality animal welfare standards for all animals in Melbourne Zoo’s care including work to ensure health and husbandry standards are to world’s best practice.• Deliver strong, growth minded leadership, identifying team strengths and weaknesses and provide mentoring and support for a fully functional, diverse team.• Deliver profound wildlife experiences to Melbourne Zoo visitors by the Life Sciences team working collaboratively with the visitor engagement team.• Inputs into new exhibits, relevant conservation projects and education programs that increase public understanding of and connection to wildlife and wildlife conservation.• Demonstrate outstanding Project leadership across diverse projects

The Senior Manager Continuous Improvement is responsible for applying LEAN and continuous improvement practices across the entire Zoos Victoria organisation including standardised work, 5S and problem solving tools. During my time in the role I was responsible for and delivered; Providing mentoring and support to all Life Science Managers and coordinators (14 teams across 3 properties) to bring about the necessary cultural change within the organisation Documented and Audited Standard Work throughout the life science teams Instituted Visual Management boards Work directly with team leads to drive process improvement projects within their areas of responsibilities  Provide organisational leadership in Zoos Victoria’s lean journey Responsible for facilitating continuous improvement activities; coaching lean leaders; and developing the capability of staff to understand and apply lean principles and practices Coach and provide feedback to managers and staff in value stream mapping, workflow analysis, PDCA problem solving, visual management and leader standard work through improvement processes and events Lead, facilitate and support problem solving projects across Zoos Victoria Work with Directors and managers to identify areas for process improvement Demonstrate respect for people through behaviours and ensure that all processes are respectful.  Develop and report on measures for monitoring the progress of ZV’s lean journey

Reporting to the Director of Wildlife Conservation and Science, in charge of strategic decision making, leading animal welfare and species management Drive cultural change: Manage, engage and motivate an Animal Welfare Specialist and a team of up to 14 Zoo Keepers, ensuring best practice animal management and wildlife care Maximise the quality of visitor experience, conservation vision and operational efficiencies Build and foster long lasting relationships across the three Zoo properties and work in close collaboration with key stakeholders Effectively coordinated a Rabbit Management review involving all 3 properties with multiple stakeholders with competing interests  Engaged management and staff from all departments across our 3 properties in the selection process of enrichment projects in 2016 and overseen the timely delivery of these projects to date  Mentored several staff within WCS and Life Sciences teams in developing their relationship management skills across departments, which has resulted in increased application of evidence-based management across the three properties  Successfully managed a strong relationship with the Animal Welfare Peer Review Committee through sensitive circumstances to ensure support is garnered and maintained for ZV’s work  Worked closely with various team members, led by example and implemented a common vision, which resulted in better team morale, staff engagement and accountability  Worked to integrate animal welfare into visitor experience programs across ZV in a mutually beneficial manner
