I serve as a Senior Program Director for Science and Engineering at the W.M. Keck Foundation, where I advise the Foundation on its investments in chemical and biological research.Prior to joining the Keck Foundation, I served as a Civilian Senior Executive at the Air Force Research Laboratory. As the Senior Scientist for Systems and Synthetic Biology, I oversaw the biotechnology research portfolio of the Air Force.I also founded Rockbluff Consulting, which provides strategy and technical consulting services for those seeking funding for applications in biotechnology.Before founding Rockbluff Consulting, I held a 5-year term appointment as a Program Manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) — the premier research organization in the US Department of Defense. I executed DARPA's mission to "make pivotal investments in breakthrough technologies for national security." I conceived, developed, and managed research efforts in synthetic biology and biotechnology with combined budgets exceeding $100M. These investments helped launch the field of Engineered Living Materials.Formerly a tenured professor in the Department of Chemistry at Emory University, I have expertise in emerging biotechnologies, scientific strategy, de-risking technology, research management, scientific due-diligence, the US government S&T landscape, leadership and mentoring, relationship building, public speaking, chemistry, life sciences, synthetic biology, microbiology, biodefense, and strategic planning.
