After graduating from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, it was important to me that I spend a year giving back. Therefore, I signed up for AmeriCorps and spent a year working with SEA, a non-profit focused on promoting engagement with the natural world and spirited environmental stewardship in Puget Sound. I crewed on a 52-foot Korean War era boat, teaching inner-city youth about the impact their actions have on the health of their environment, and the impact the health of the environment has on them. I also helped SEA write grants and wrote and designed the newsletter. In addition to working with SEA, I worked as a manger in the youth volunteer run coffeehouse, South Whidbey Commons, mentoring youths and providing them with work experience. I handled all marketing for the coffeehouse and created a committee of high school volunteers, Y.E.S. (Youth Engagement Squad), to advise the Board of Directors.
