After two years of community engagement, I developed a network of over 150 organizational contacts, 30 organizational partners (orgs that provided volunteers or physical space for our programs), completed training for 20 prison/community facilitators, created a stable local council of volunteers, and developed an internship program with 5 departments at CSU Chico. The High Desert Program now has a monthly workshop on each of the 4 Prison yards--key deliverable. MY WORK: Director of University Partnerships: As the Director of University Partnerships I rolled out the AVP/CA training program across California; partnering with 4 California State Universities and the University of San Diego’s Graduate Institute of Peace Studies. This process involved building relationships with departmental heads and professors, following university protocols/insurance policies, working with their risk management departments, managing documentation, finding internship coordinators for AVP, and setting up program guidelines. To develop additional credibility for our program I worked with a range of social service agencies to qualify our program for continued education credits (this can be found in the Public Engagements section of my resume) and engaged in a range of public speaking at community events including: Dr. King Celebrations and the Pulse Orlando Shooting Memorial.

KEY SKILLS: Program Management, Data Analytics/IT, Game Design/Gaming Mechanic Design, Report Drafting, and Revenue Source Development CONTEXT: In 2015, MGIEP, a UNESCO organization, launched its inaugural gaming challenge to catalyze the development of digital games focused on education and sustainability—over 150 entries were submitted and 5 were selected for phase 1. Winners received limited funding and mentorship from Game development and Educational development industry leaders, including: Electronic Arts, Sesame St., University of Florida, the head of MGIEP and a range of other experts. MY WORK: I conceptualized and wrote the initial proposal and budget for Cartographer; a gaming and crowdsourced data analysis platform. My goal was to create an app and web-based platform that would encourage gamers/players to provide basic data analysis of satellite images through gameplay. Data from multiple users would then be aggregated and analyzed to provide information to sponsoring governmental, non-profit, and corporate organizations. An example gaming mechanic is a comparison of before and after satellite images of infrastructure in regions that have experienced natural disasters. Players would be rewarded points for finding damage to buildings, roads, and other selected forms of infrastructure (augmenting Providing Post Disaster Needs Assessments)—creating accuracy through multiple gamers (crowdsourcing) reporting damage in the same location.

KEY SKILLS: Research, Deployment Coordination, Data Analytics/IT--Database Management, Human Resource Administration, and Report Drafting CONTEXT: The Rapid Response Support Unit (RRSU) is a 5-member team that provides crisis deployments of pre-vetted expert consultants and UNDP staff to UN Country Offices. The RRSU partners with the UNDPKO, UNOCHA, and the Norwegian Refugee Council to cover 8 crisis profiles: Conflict Prevention & Peacebuilding, Disaster Risk Reduction & Recovery, Livelihoods & Early Recovery, Disarmament-Demobilization & Reintegration, Rule of Law, Monitoring & Evaluation, Gender & Crisis, and Senior Advisors on Crisis Prevention & Recovery Issues. MY WORK: My work at UNDP’s RRSU included management of the Salesforce-based IT database, coordination of our vetting process, and crisis research support. The technical management of the ExpRes and SURGE databases, including reviewing Country Office deployment Requests/ToRs, matching short lists of technical experts or UNDP staff, and coordinating interest and availability for deployment. This totaled ~150 deployments and included data management for over a thousand unique profiles. Additional projects included drafting annual reports for the SURGE training program, deployment data analysis, and coordination for the 10,000 applicant vetting process—resulting in roughly 400 new experts for the ExpRes roster. Examples of multi-sector deployments that I supported include the destabilization in Central African Republic (CAR) and Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. My role for the CAR SURGE PLAN entailed finding external experts and UNDP SURGE staff members across rule of law, security, public administration, and operations. I coordinated their availability, interest, and daily-rate for deployments. My role during the Typhoon Haiyan SURGE PLAN entailed finding experts for disaster risk reduction and recovery, rubble removal, infrastructure development, communications, and UNDP Country Team operations.

KEY SKILLS: Research, Field Research, Interviewing, Conflict Assessment, and Report DraftingCONTEXT: Mozambique Governance Watch (MGW) is a Mozambican NGO dedicated to monitoring the Government of Mozambique’s (GoMs) democratic and good governance. As the country develops its Extractive Industries (EI) and sizeable natural gas and coal deposits, civil society organizations, such as MGW, support the country’s usage of the new wealth towards inclusive development. The Columbia University and MGW joint Capstone Project includes a comprehensive report that addresses Mozambique’s EI related challenges, case studies from international best practices, and implementable recommendations. The final report, Mozambique: Mobilizing Extractive Resources for Development was published in 2013.MY WORK: I co-wrote the final report’s chapter on democratic and good governance titled, The Case for Strong and Reliable Institutions. My in-depth analysis of political, economic, and social stability included a review of national level checks and balances, rule of law, accountability, and governance capacity. My research methodology included extensive literature and policy reviews, and in-country stakeholder and actor interviews at the ministerial, agency, diplomatic, NGO, INGO and grassroots levels.

KEY SKILLS: Logistics, Coordination, Documentation, Database management, Human Resources, & CommunicationCONTEXT: The Oil, Rights, and Development Course is a two day multi-layered simulation established to provide participants with a simulation that mirrors dyanimcs involved in complex emerging crisis. It is Columbia University’s largest simulation, serving over 100 participants distributed over 18 teams, and includes observers from the US Dept. of Defense. The simulation allows participants to explore and role-play as actors from different sectors/communities. The simulation dynamics are complicated by forces that include: the extractive industries, religious groups, government factions, macroeconomics, media, civilians, and external governments to name a few. MY WORK: As the Graduate Teaching Assistant, I provided administrative and logistical organization for the course. This included organizing participant registration, orientations, documentation, meals, and facility reservations for the two-day event. I was also tasked with collecting ~100 resumes and distributing them into relevant simulation teams based on their professional experiences. Finally, I created and managed the WordPress news aggregator; it allowed participant groups to post real-time newsfeeds for the simulated environment. After the simulation, I collected performance feedback, compiled the info. for review, and hired a teaching assistant for the next year.

KEY SKILLS: Research, Interviewing, Program Development, Conflict Assessment, and Report DraftingCONTEXT: The Secretariat for the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), based in Bujumbura, Burundi, is the United Nation and African Union supported intra-governmental treaty body tasked with handling transnational issues facing the region. This joint Columbia University and George Mason graduate internship focuses on regional and country-specific conflict and provides graduate students with applied peacebuilding research experience.MY WORK: I carried out a conflict assessment of Burundi and created a functional Early Warning System (EWS) prototype for incident reporting. My initial research consisted of a 5 months desk review and New York-based interviews. I focused on War Crimes, Crimes against Humanity, Genocide, and other forms of local and regional mass violence. My 2 months of field research lead to an EWS proposal and Burundi specific prototype that utilized an Ushahidi/Rapid SMS software, a focal point network, and a local radio station to monitor and track data for incidences of violence. The research required the cultivation of trust-based relationships with the interviewees, due to the sensitive subjects, and included individuals from vulnerable and politically targeted communities. I continue to maintain and expand this Burundi based network.

CONTEXT: Lin-Zhi International Inc. (LZI) is a biotechnology company focused on research, development, and production of laboratory diagnostics. Its international customer base includes government agencies, clinical laboratories, universities, distributors, and partnerships with leading multi-national corporations. Its advanced assay solutions and product offerings continue to make it a diagnostics industry leader.MY WORK: At LZI I was responsible for customer engagement/acquisition/management, contract negotiation/structuring, technical writing, project management, international regulatory, audits, and internal quality assurance. I managed 5 employees from our production, quality control, and regulatory departments and oversaw the transition from negative to positive net revenues, doubling/moving the facility space (6k to 12k), and expanding from 4 to 20 employees. As the Head of Regulatory, I created, implemented & managed our Quality Management System: ISO 13485. I also conducted internal audits and was the responsible for external audits and compliance from the FDA, DEA, EPA, CAEPA, ISO accreditation company, and customers.
