In addition to servicing requests, we are also tapped by various entities in VA to provide subject matter expertise on how GIS, data, and geographic topics apply in VHA and how it can inform policy, law, or regulation. GSOD also lends their talents, support and vast institutional knowledge to expand GIS capabilities and resources across the VHA enterprise, as part of the VHA GIS Initiative. Some examples of our work are mapping out women's health programs, impact and reach of rural telemedicine programs at various VA health care sites across the nation, gaps in transportation, optimal site location, broadband Internet speed availability in rural areas and using geoprocessing and spatial analysis tools to calculate rural Enrollee population at ZIP Code or Census Tract level in gap areas. Ensured quality data collected from five non-VA grantee sites with over 6,000 records and 100 data elements across six relational databases, which were the backbone of the final program report to be routed through VA leadership and eventually reaching Congress, who mandated this program.
