About Justin Kodama
👋 Hi! I'm a design leader with over 15 years experience delivering innovative products across numerous industries and over 5 years in design leadership.I’m a big believer in supporting and empowering my team to give them the freedom and creative space to do their best work. I also strongly believe that design is a team-sport, where collaboration and curiosity are the keys to better outcomes. And lastly, I believe a tight-knit team built intentionally through meaningful connection is so, so powerful. Most recently, I’ve been leading design teams and designing digital therapeutics for people with mental health issues (substance use disorder, chronic insomnia, schizophrenia), at Pear Therapeutics.Prior to Pear Therapeutics, I was building the first product design team, design culture, and design ecosystem at Bain & Company.Prior to Bain, I was democratizing financial markets at LOYAL3. We broke down barriers to investment for the middle class and brought the ability to invest in IPOs to the masses. We made investing approachable.Prior to LOYAL3, I was creating, innovating, and building an award-winning mobile operating system from scratch at Palm.

At Pear, we are creating digital medicine. We call them prescription digital therapeutics (PDTs) - products that take therapeutic methods and deliver them in an engaging and educational manner to drive positive outcomes. We show their efficacy in clinical trials, work with the FDA to authorize them, and then work with doctors to prescribe PDTs to patients. I’ve had the opportunity to lead design on products for people with schizophrenia, chronic insomnia, substance use disorder, and more. Each population is unique and it has been so meaningful to be able to apply my design skills to create products that can improve people’s lives on a day-to-day basis. I’ve also had the pleasure of being part of the Design Leadership team while also leading a team of wonderful product designers to create and deliver innovative solutions to achieve business goals while meeting customer needs for provider and patient products.
Principal Product Designer + Design Leadership Team
Senior Product Designer
Product Design Lead
Bain needed to build out a product and design function as a capability they could offer to their Fortune 500 clients. It simply did not exist. So when I was offered the position to be the first product designer hired at Bain, I jumped at it. It was an incredible opportunity to define what design meant at Bain, establish how design was delivered to their clients, and help build a team that could tackle design across a wide range of industries. Additionally, working at Bain allowed gave me a breadth of experience by working across numerous industries (agriculture, healthcare, aviation, e-commerce, insurance, to name a few) and locations around the world. I’m proud to say that I helped launch product design at Bain.
User Experience Design Manager
LOYAL3’s mission was audacious at the time I joined. Make investing in stocks as simpler than placing an order on Amazon so that more of the middle class could invest for retirement. To begin with, that meant taking complex and intimidating financial concepts and making them approachable and friendly. We accomplished that with no fees, fractional shares, and a clean and simple design. In fact, we took those design principles from stocks to IPOs to Follow-ons and even Stock Rewards. The company was acquired, but it’s nice to see the simple concepts we designed appear in modern financial companies many years later.
Senior Ux Designer
Creative Lead & Manager
I joined Palm right as the smartphone wars were kicking off. Apple and Google had not yet shipped any iOS or Android devices. At Palm, I had the opportunity to be on the ground floor of designing a new mobile operating system (webOS) from scratch. During these exciting years, I led design on numerous applications that you use everyday on a smartphone (Phone, Email, Messaging, Maps, and more) and the components I designed there defined common patterns across the entire OS. Later, I managed and provided design direction to a talented team of 8 designers and user researchers to deliver a suite of 10 core apps for webOS on both phones and tablets. I learned first-hand what it meant to be a design leader and empower my team while creating the necessary processes to do amazing work.

What a ride this was! What started out as a side project turned into the most popular Golden State Warriors NBA blog. To get there, I co-managed a team of 7 to deliver high quality content and build out an active and engaged online community. The aspect I enjoyed the most was working with the Golden State Warriors group ticket sales team to organize 9 GSOM Nights - events that bring community members together from the online community to actual Warriors basketball games and hang out. We sold over 3000 tickets and for one opening night game, 5% of the entire stadium were tickets sold through Golden State of Mind.
