Senior Software EngineerFlipkey By Tripadvisor Jul 2010 - Dec 2012Boston, Ma, UsJoined FlipKey in their early startup phase and experienced first hand FlipKey's tremendous growth from 30 to 120 employees, 200%+ YoY traffic growth, a switch from a subscription based business model to a transactional one, and through to an acquisition by TripAdvisor in December 2012. Primary responsibilities were feature development and mentorship of junior engineers. Languages and technologies used were PHP, JavaScript, HTML, SCSS/CSS, MySQL, Memcached, Redis, SphinxSearch, CakePHP, and Python. During my tenure at FlipKey I championed and implemented a number of technologies such as SASS/SCSS/Compass for better cross browser compatibility and maintenance of CSS, Fontcustom for custom font icon sets, pre-compilers for CSS and JS to minify and concatenate these assets, and numerous image optimizers for all image types to improve client side performance. All of these technologies significantly improved the speed and quality of development. In addition to these technologies I have introduced and championed myself, there are a number of which I was instrumental in the design decision and implementation, these include SphinxSearch a full text search engine and New Relic for APM (application performance monitoring). -

Responsibilities include architecture, design and implementation of the citysquares.com website. Created a complex mashup between users, location, geospatial and business data as the fundamental groundwork of the site. Employed MySQL, Memcached and SOLR/Lucene search with custom object orientated PHP modules and classes to interface with the Drupal CMS framework. Optimized our code base as well as the Drupal core, denormalized tables and divided complex queries between MySQL and SOLR to mitigate performance and scalability issues. Part of the Drupal core modifications included the creation of a more robust and efficient menu dispatch system geared specifically for CitySquares' URLs. Developed batch processes with Python when PHP was unable to scale appropriately. Sped up AJAX development by utilizing the jQuery JavaScript library and associated plug-ins. Worked with CSS frameworks Compass and Blueprint to easily build and maintain our style sheets and eliminate discrepancies across browsers. Worked with a well known SEO consultant to establish an all encompassing SEO strategy from content layout and presentation to a content creation policy which aims to maximize CitySquares’ SEO rankings. -

R&D Software EngineerGeneral Dynamics Apr 2005 - Sep 2005Reston, Virginia, UsDetermined the feasibility of converting GUIs from one software set and platform to another for Trident nuclear submarines. General Dynamics began using Microsoft VB .NET for rapid application development of the GUI but still used a time consuming manual process to convert the VB into C and Motif for production use on a custom Unix distribution. Proceeded to establish feasibility, as well as design and produce a time and money saving prototype. Used VB .NET to natively interpret the GUI and produce a description of the code using XML serialization for compatibility and maintainability purposes before replicating the VB .Net code in C and Motif.
