Prior to its management buyout, Median was the home of ITS and its legal tech recruitment services. Moving to the role of Managing Director, I took full responsibility for ITS and Median. Developing new business opportunities and training new team members to work with our partners. Still with a more hands-on focus on ITS, ITS was able to grow considerably during this time and took on a variety of ambitious new projects. Our landmark achievement was the implementation of our first managed service desk. One of our largest clients wanted to have a continuity of service from the group of contractors we had on their service desk and asked us to design a model that would deliver this. With the resulting solution, they were able to accurately measure the demand from the business and to maintain the right resourcing levels. This learning led into the innovative ‘Shift Left’, service delivery enabler that we now deliver for our clients. In 2008, we became the only recruitment company to win a National Legal Technology Award.

The service we offered went beyond standard recruitment by introducing increased value-adds to our clients; implementing innovative resourcing solutions and working with internal management teams to ensure organisational goals were being met.With our insights into how legal IT departments work and the relationships we nurture with our law firm partners, we were able to start focusing more on hiring senior talent. With our reputation and close relationship on our law firm partners, we were able to start focusing more on delivering key client projects; our biggest achievement was supplying and managing a team of expert contractors across numerous disciplines to a leading law firm as part of a £11 million technology refresh programme. During 2004 I helped launch a new legal tech networking event. Gathering IT Directors from across the legal world in order to discuss and workshop problems in the sector.

As its first employee, I was responsible for developing our service to law firms from the ground up ensuring it was designed based on what our clients wanted, rather than how the existing IT recruitment agencies wanted to operate.Legal technology recruitment provides a unique challenge. Many law firms struggle to find talent as the roles require not just IT expertise but a certain mix of soft skills to navigate the legal world. Being able to design a service for them was a rare opportunity and enabled us to set the bar in what good recruitment needed to be in Legal. This was the first of our many ‘firsts’.I gained insight into managing this challenge while working with the firm CMS Cameron McKenna. This was a client that needed a temporary recruitment manager for a year, and I was asked to fill that role while working at ITS. Here I was able to get firsthand experience with how IT professionals fit into a legal firm and how to carry out an effective competency interview. I made the in-depth, face-to-face competency screening I learnt here a central part of how we screen candidates at ITS, setting the benchmark for how to screen talent for law firms.With this approach, we were able to grow ITS into a premier recruitment service. Not only providing recruitment, but offering consultation over the development of internal hiring processes.
