I managed and implemented the transition of our managed service product from Zenith Infotech to Labtech, including customizing Labtech to work with our best practices, and developing scripts and monitors to add functionality to Labtech.

Networks Plus was a place where I was able to implement a lot of what I learned in college, but my thirst for knowledge continued by soaking up techniques from my colleagues. I saw the value of building flexible, scalable, and secure designs from the outset. It may take a little longer to get things going initially, but in the long run, is the only way to design. I worked with experienced project managers on complex projects and successfully implemented what I learned on my own projects. I gained experience with enterprise level applications like Active Directory, Exchange, Group Policy, Citrix Presentation Server and Backup Exec. What I experienced at Networks Plus ultimately built the foundation for what is possible today.

Served as the onsite technology guru for the Kansas State Forest Service and was the first line of defense for all site-wide issues in the department. I was responsible for day-to-day operations like tracking and replenishing consumables, enhancing network security and operations, but also utilized technology to help staff with their own internal projects. The archacic website was in need of modernization, so I completely revamped the state website by updating content, adding new functionality as requested by staff, and coding all pages to comply with state accessibility and compliance regulations.

The Mobile Irrigation Lab at Kansas State University had developed custom software and needed a USDA certified installer package to distribute to farmers and ranchers across the state. My contacts at Research and Extension presented an opportunity for me assist in this endeavor. I was tasked with researching installer packages, developing, testing, and certifying the installer package to pass USDA governmental regulations.

After attending classes in the mornings, I spent most of my weekday afternoons fielding support calls and assisting KSU Research and Exension employees with technical issues. I was one of three students on the helpdesk supporting over 2,000 end users at field offices all over the state of Kansas. Most of the work was performed remotely without the use of todays remote assistance tools, so walking users through a process step by step required a deep understanding of basic troubleshooting procedures. And since I could not always remote in and fix issues directly, developing documentation and techniques to empower end-users was an ever-present and useful skill.

Spent the summer after my Sophomore year in college working for a tech startup named Tidestone Technologies on their Java-based, Excel alternative titled Formula One. Just two weeks into the internship, the company was acquired by Actuate Corporation. My duties included rewriting the regression testing platform to function with the new releases of Java v1.4. I also assisted the Systems Administrator with re-imaging workstations and deploying software packages for the internal corporate network - my first real experience with enterprise-level information technology. From that summer on I learned that I enjoyed programming, but knew my heart was with hardware.
