At Keolis Commuter Services (KCS), our mission is simple: to transport passengers from point A to point B with utmost safety and efficiency. My six-month tenure at KCS let me experience this firsthand. It not only deepened my understanding of the MBTA Commuter Rail transit system but also allowed me to enhance my technical skills.My proudest moments at KCS revolved around projects aimed at optimizing efficiency within the Commuter Rail system, establishing a foundation for our new database, and ensuring accurate train identification. I enhanced efficiency by addressing scheduled track changes and ensuring passengers were informed about the correct arrival tracks. I accomplished this by working to debug with static GTFS data and add functionality to our pre-existing Python codebase, where real-time data streamed in every 5 seconds. This guaranteed that trains passing these thresholds were on the correct track for display.To lay the groundwork for our new database, I undertook a graph networking project using NetworkX. My task was to determine the shortest path between two points (e.g., stations) in our system. Leveraging the NetworkX library, I developed Python/SQL code to use pandas to combine data from separate sources into a single "source of truth" dataset, and employed NetworkX to find the shortest path and visualize the system. This helped to lay the groundwork for connecting new or modified train services, including the South Coast Rail project.In ensuring proper train identification, I improved the data pipeline between the train schedule planning system and the onboard customer information system. This process involved extensive XML transformation, generation, and validation using Python, allowing me to become proficient in XML parsing libraries like lxml and XML schema. This process minimized any vehicles assigned to the wrong trip and led to more accurate and reliable data for passengers.
