Direct report to the Group Operations Director, responsible for Mpac’s Group Engineering function (c.65 staff across the UK, Netherlands and Canada), setting high level goals and developing the teams to support the execution of the organisation’s strategic plan, in addition to Engineering Director responsibilities below.

Accountable for project delivery and the performance and development of the Project Management and Engineering Teams (c. 25 staff). Responsible for pre-contract review of proposals to ensure technical risks were understood and level of commercial risk was managed effectively to deliver budgeted financial performance. Alongside the Commercial Director, responsible for successfully negotiating contracts both pre and post order acceptance.Worked closely with other senior leaders to deliver stable revenue growth and much improved profitability against a backdrop of erratic order intake and high value, high risk, first of a kind capital projects.Led a programme of change at MPac Langen Coventry that delivered a 22% increase in revenue / head and a 115% increase in profit / head in the first two years and an average of 4% and 15% respectively YoY thereafter.Clearly defined individuals’ roles within Engineering. Recruited and successfully embedded Engineering Team Leads. Created an independent Project Management team. Co-located teams previously fragmented by discipline and led a sustained programme of recruitment to drive growth and improved performance.Led Project Managers and Team Leads to successfully establish defined project and resource management processes and tools; including: monthly project reviews, standardised project status reporting, risk management and effective pooling of resources.Appointed a Quality Manager and provided support to gain ISO9001 accreditation for Mpac Langen Coventry.Established an in-house capability for safe handling of hazardous materials under controlled conditions. The ISO 7 cleanroom enabled the development of high speed powder dosing technologies with active pharmaceutical ingredients (API’s).Secured capital funding and led the technology development of u-check and u-fill; complementary technologies for precise microgram dosing of pharmaceutical powder formulations.

Responsible for TAP Biosystem's engineering function; managing teams of mechanical, electrical, electronic and machine control engineers in the delivery of large scale custom automation projects and development of complex products for pharmaceutical and biotech companies worldwide.Instrumental in leading the transition from a custom engineering business delivering capital projects (up to £5m) to a products company providing high value lab scale solutions for the life sciences sector.Strengthened engineering capability by rationalising three separate functional groups into a single high performing integrated team and successfully recruiting and embedding additional staff across all disciplines.Introduced a structured product development process and created product engineering roles to support the company's expanding product range.Implemented formal design reviews, product release phase gates and robust change control processes. Improved the quality and delivery of products and projects.Led the development of three new benchtop products from requirement definition through to transfer of production engineered designs into manufacture, over 200 systems sold to date generating significant additional revenue year on year.Gained IMechE accreditation for the company. Identifying and developing new technologies to further the company's product portfolio; the role required a combination of client facing and consultancy skills utilizing internal and external resource. Direct report to the Chief Technology Officer.

Developing and installing complex automated systems, leading design teams, selecting and developing sub-contractors and close liaison with the software group. Typical project values; £250k to £1.5m.

Management, review and approval of all aspects of engineering design (electronic, mechanical, opto-mechanical) for a range of complex laser products (typical values £10k to £100k). Developed Spectron’s first diode pumped CW laser systems which quickly replaced traditional lamp pumped models due to their smaller size, greater efficiency and reduced cooling requirements.

Responsible for all aspects of mechanical design from concept through to production, including out-sourcing and setting up manufacturing lines. Developed and implemented procedures which led to the company gaining ISO9001 accreditation.
