  • Bitsaloon
    Founder
    Bitsaloon Jul 2013 - Nov 2013
In the glory days of the digital currency Bitcoin, Kevin Meehan and I founded BitSaloon - a provably-fair online casino. We designed and built the entire site ourselves, including multiplayer poker, video poker, roulette, hi-lo, a lottery, a sportsbook, and account management, reporting, and payment systems. Due to the uncertain future of Bitcoin and the questionable legality of running an unlicensed digital casino, we decided to sell the business and pursue more traditional ventures.
  • Tigerlily Labs, Inc.
    Founder
Tigerlily Labs, Inc. Sep 2012 - Nov 2013
The primary focus of Tigerlily Labs (http://tigerli.ly) was codeStreak (www.codeStreak.com) - a 6-week, onsite Ruby on Rails program intended for individuals with little or no technical background. By the end of the program, students will have a great portfolio project, and enough technical skill to get a job as a junior developer.Additionally, Tigerlily is a small collective of freelancers. If you're looking for web development work, send a message! We focus on Ruby on Rails and node.js applications, but can build anything you can dream up.
  • Universitynow, Inc.
    Founding Engineer
    Universitynow, Inc. May 2011 - Sep 2012
I built most of the infrastructure and core systems of UniversityNow, including a Ruby on Rails classroom application, a node.js server to process inbound mail automatically, and several installs of wordpress for marketing sites. There's way too much to talk about in a little blurb, so ask me in person about my contributions! In addition, during my time at UniversityNow we had a contract with Pivotal Labs. I spent several months immersed in Pivotal culture, doing a deep dive into agile methodology, extreme programming, and development best practices.
  • Trisse
    Founder / Ceo
    Trisse Jan 2011 - Aug 2011
I founded Trisse along with Tyler York. It was our own small flash-sale site, specializing in the artisan food and beverage niche. It was moderately successful, but soon after we got off the ground Gilt announced and launched Gilt Taste, which basically just blew us out of the water. The established Gilt brand lured many of our vendors, and although our vendors wanted to continue working with us, Gilt strong-armed them into exclusive contracts. In addition, it was just really difficult to compete with the massive marketing budget Gilt set up for Gilt Taste. All these things considered, we decided to close the company and end on a high note, rather than to fight what looked like it would be an impossible battle.I managed the business, handled the finances, and coded our website using Java/GWT, while Tyler led the marketing and product curation fronts.
  • Google
    Software Engineer
    Google May 2010 - May 2011
    Mountain View, Ca, Us
I worked in mobile advertising. I'm primarily a server-side developer, but also frequently work on Android and iPhone SDKs.Google has an internal initiative called "20% time", which basically allows engineers to work on something outside of their core focus area one day a week. I took advantage of this freedom by getting involved with Google's EngEDU, a group that provides engineers with learning resources to help them be productive and grow their careers. In EngEDU, I donned the facilitator hat by teaching classes, leading group workshops, and giving interactive presentations. Not wanting to be limited to teaching engineers, I applied and was accepted to a similar organization-wide educational program where I contributed my skills as a member of gFaculty.
  • Admob (Acquired By Google)
    Software Engineer
Admob (Acquired By Google) 2009 - May 2011
Transitioned AdMob systems onto Google infrastructure.Google's acquisition of AdMob was a bittersweet victory. It was great to work in a startup environment and to help make the company successful, but the shift to a corporate environment is tough. It's fantastic to have the resources and tools to build anything, but I really loved the challenge of working with limitations.
  • Admob
    Software Engineer
    Admob Sep 2009 - May 2010
I redesigned and rebuilt AdWhirl (https://www.adwhirl.com/) to run as a distributed system on Amazon's cloud. The system has seen spikes of ~7,000 requests per second without breaking a sweat. I also rewrote the website from scratch, using an MVC design pattern. In addition, I created an Android client to use the service, as well as helped to develop the iPhone client.
  • Boeing
    Mts, Software Engineering
    Boeing Jun 2009 - Sep 2009
    Arlington, Va, Us
A lot of people don't realize that Boeing does a lot of non-aircraft related defense contracts, and I was assigned to one of these (confidential) projects. The work itself was very interesting, but the large-company culture was not a good fit.
  • Cert
    Student Intern
    Cert May 2006 - Jun 2009
    Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Us
Working at CERT was fantastic, and I did a ton of awesome stuff there. Some highlights include:Building/extending a static analysis tool based on Compass/Rose's source-to-source compilation to check for security vulnerabilities in an automated fashion.Combing through the entire ISO C standard, and documenting all cases of undefined or implementation-defined behavior which would potentially contribute to a security vulnerability. You can view my work (I'd estimate that I contributed about a third of the project) at this wiki (https://www.securecoding.cert.org/confluence/display/seccode/CERT+C+Secure+Coding+Standard), which got published as this book (http://www.informit.com/store/product.aspx?isbn=0321563212).Contributing to this technical report on Ranged Integers for the C Programming Language (www.cert.org/archive/pdf/07tn027.pdf).
