About Justin Willig

I’ve always been passionate about preserving and protecting the marine environment. However, it wasn't until I went scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef that I saw firsthand, the destruction that humans are causing to coral reef ecosystems. Instead of seeing a colorful, lush environment full of tropical fish species and hard and soft corals, I saw a barren landscape, full of bleached white corals that were void of life. From that moment on, I wanted to work in a policy position to protect marine species and the underlying environment from human disturbances. My strong areas of interest include managing the populations of threatened and endangered species, preserving marine protected areas, and helping minimize the impacts of climate change including global warming and ocean acidification. My expertise includes extensive knowledge of ocean and environmental sciences, the application of marine policy and law, broad experience in database management, statistics, natural resource economics, ecotourism, and ArcGIS. Highlights of my career include leading expeditions in Raja Ampat, Palau, and Belize. Training and overseeing hundreds of coordinators around the world for the International Coastal Cleanup at Ocean Conservancy. I’ve also worked in Japan with University of Tokyo colleagues to see how the Tohoku Tsunami and Earthquake impacted cities and fisheries markets. Additionally, I have experience in coastal and marine spatial planning, and using ArcGIS to map areas’ species and habitat to define locations that are suitable for marine protected areas. My intended career path is to build upon these skills and experiences to create a meaningful impact on the world so that future generations can utilize ocean resources for years to come. Keywords: fisheries management, ocean policy, ocean law, marine protected areas, climate change, global warming, ocean acidification, disaster management, endangered species management, natural resource management, ecotourism.

Listed skills include Microsoft Office, Research, Customer Service, Project Management, and 18 others.

Conservation Travel Programs Coordinator

Washington D.C. Metro Area

I coordinated Oceanic Society's Expeditions program, which is designed to send travelers to unique places around the world, so they can learn about marine ecosystems, and understand how negative human behaviors are impacting the marine environment. Our goal was to create life-changing experiences by connecting people with nature, so that they would become stewards of the ocean and its resources. We also supported local communities through ecotourism, and provide financial assistance to scientists. As the Conservation Travel Programs Coordinator, I coordinated and managed 40-50 trips per year (both regular and citizen-science) in 25 countries located throughout Southeast Asia, Oceania, Australia, Central and South America, North America, the Caribbean, and Africa. Most trips are ocean related (snorkeling and diving), but we also do land-based safari style expeditions. My other duties included designing trips, guiding expeditions (Palau, Raja Ampat Indonesia, and Belize), writing all trip-related marketing materials (pre-trip packets, brochures, annual catalogs, blogs), sales, database management, website maintenance, managing all customer relations (400+ clients per year), ensuring that guides would run trips using proper protocols, and fundraising.

I also trained every country coordinator worldwide through a series of webinars to ensure that every cleanup coordinator used the same methodology when collecting and reporting their data. Additionally, I developed an online database managing tool so that all data collected during the cleanups could be imported online, instead of being sent through the mail.
