I investigate the biological effects of chemicals that increase breast cancer risk, focusing especially on DNA damage and repair, mutagenesis, and hormonal stimulation, and the interactions between these mechanisms that lead to breast cancer.
I led in vivo research projects into how genetic variations in DNA repair capacity impact susceptibility to cancer following exposure to environmental contaminants as part of the MIT Superfund Research Program. I also led the Research Translation Core for MIT's Superfund Research Program, acting as the link connecting MIT scientists conducting.
I research the relationships between inflammation, DNA damage and cancer as related to the gut microbiome. With a mouse model that allows us to detect mutations due to homologous recombination or point mutations, we can probe the effects of pathogenic and probiotic bacterial colonization on inflammation in many tissues.
I designed and performed a cDNA rescue screen to find a synthetic lethal gene target for a drug undergoing clinical trials.
I helped develop a mathematical model used to predict and optimize polymer microsphere formulations for controlled drug release. We were able to use this model both to design PLGA microspheres that deliver a constant level of drug over the course of one month, and also illustrate the importance of mathematical modeling in designing and testing controlled.
I researched cell motility in different model environments and under treatment with various growth factors. The objective was to explore the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition cancer cells undergo to become metastatic, but we also discovered the importance of evaluating motility in a 3 dimensional matrix rather than on a flat surface.
