  • Dalton Maag
    Type Design Intern
    Dalton Maag Jun 2018 - Jul 2018
    London, United Kingdom
I spent two months expanding my knowledge of type design and font engineering at the Dalton Maag Studio in Brixton. The internship lasted 8 weeks with different tasks to tackle in each. It started with basic calligraphy of a few different styles and hand-drawing classic typefaces to great detail. Week three, I began a new design of a new typeface of my choice. I decided to explore something of the Clarendon genre but with a modern take. Using FontLab5, the following six weeks included: drawing an ‘ideation’ glyph set (which included lots of testing, printing, checking); expanding ideation set after approval; drawing extreme weights; interpolating between extremes and weight planning; drawing italics and interpolating between extreme weights. In all, the two-months were a great way of learning a method to develop more typefaces in the future. The people I worked with were incredibly knowledgable and encouraging. The 8-week program helped me fine-tune my eye for drawing and criticizing my own work.

Worked with the HJF creative team in the design, creation and production of a series of booklets for a program helping to educate people on joint pain. Daily activities included working in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop for the editing and design of the supporting literature and presentations. For quality control, I printed these booklets as prototypes for editing reasons before the final product was sent to the print vendor. Due to the success of the joint pain program, which was funded by the Department of Defense and Veterans Health Administration, was asked to conceptualize branding for a battlefield acupuncture program for that is operated through the Air Force. Using the branding elements I developed, applied them to informational literature, surveys and presentations. The project was in the final steps of development before relocating to Cambridge, MA. Thus, I did not get to see it finished but it the concept was approved and highly regarded by the project leader. During these larger projects I also assisted the design team by contributing to a variety of projects, such as redesigning a desk calendar, designing logo proposals for new groups and helping team members with production of posters.Utilized Adobe Creative Suite to develop thoughtful solutions in order to solve visual communication problems. Seamless communication with project leaders to keep projects moving through the pipeline.

Created Instagram posts, digital ads, and other small digital signage for the stadium. Helped the Nationals turn around a lot of projects in short amount time to catch up on work flow. But have also helped the organization by creating some great internal pieces for the employees that work in the stadium during game day. Used my creative talent by pushing the limits on the brand: It's been a goal of mine to see what I can do with the organizations strict guidelines by coming up with new ideas. I did this by really pushing the limits with certain projects by using different color/type treatments.
