As a professor, being a serial co-founder and chief scientific officer complete my professional life.I'm a naive optimist and pragmatic perfectionist, a creative thinker, and I love to inspire and motivate team members. I'm both a generalist and a specialist. ProfessorGhent University Oct 2007 - PresentGhent, BelgiumAs a professor in Functional Cancer Genomics and Applied Bioinformatics in the Department of Biomolecular Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (Ghent University) I focus on academic research and do a bit of teaching (Master of Biomedical Sciences, Master of Bioinformatics). I co-supervise the OncoRNALab that exploits RNA for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The various research lines converge on studying the role of (non-coding) RNA in cancer and the utility of extracellular nucleic acids in liquid biopsies. Most recently, we embraced spatial -omics applications through the development of a custom technology platform. Generating novel nucleic acid quantification strategies (PCR or sequencing) is at the core of what we do. Through a combination of high-throughput functional genomics technologies and bio-informatics tools, both fundamental and translational research questions in oncology are addressed. Curiosity is what drives us. -
Co-Founder And CsoPxlence Feb 2015 - PresentDendermonde, Belgiumpxlence is a medical technology company developing and manufacturing PCR assays and kits for targeted resequencing or digital PCR nucleic acid quantification. pxlence was created as a spin-off company from Ghent University in 2015. We identify unmet needs in the detection of patients’ genetic defects and apply innovative solutions. We combine unique expertise in PCR design and multiplex amplification with leading industry knowledge.Using our state-of-the-art high-throughput primer design pipeline, one million PCR assays for targeted resequencing of DNA from fresh frozen or formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue covering 99% of the human exome were expertly designed. These best-in-class assays enable the enrichment of any exonic region of interest for targeted resequencing (discovery) or for confirmation of variants by means of Sanger or massively parallel sequencing (NGS). The assays are also used for pedigree analysis of variants of unknown significance. More than 10,000 different assays for 500 disease genes have been successfully tested in diagnostic laboratories (ISO 15189).Using our single-tube multiplex PCR and sequencing library preparation technology, a 50-SNP Human Sample ID Kit was released in 2020, followed by a mini-version covering 13 SNPs in 2022. Most recently, we developed Rainbow DNA detection technology using universal probes for digital PCR and quantitative PCR. Our customers include clinical diagnostic laboratories and medical device companies in the field of PCR based molecular analyses. -
