Phd Mechanical Engineering Research Assistant

Twin Cities, Minneapolis

I conduct PhD research at the Mechanical Engineering and Power Systems (MEPS) Laboratory at the University of Minnesota, underneath the advisement of Professor James Van de Ven. Our work at MEPS focuses on bringing fresh solutions to the mature technology of fluid power, tightly integrating academia with industry. I am currently modeling, designing, and experimentally validating a novel hydraulic motor. This motor utilizes a new kinematic optimization to create a continuously variable displacement, with the target application of a hydraulic propulsion of construction vehicles.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Area

I assisted in the maintenance and modernization of the E-3 AWACS plane by working in a team-based, detail-oriented, and high-security environment. My primary contribution was the creation of dozens of 3D models and 2D drawings of components of the AWACS ground and training systems. Also, by working closely with the Project Engineer and Drawing Quality Assurance, I created a 23 page technical installation book to be used directly by a Boeing customer. Other responsibilities include signing off on drawings and parts lists, and regularly aggregating and organizing data for manager. Throughout the summer, I completed formal training for CATIA V5, Enovia, and many other engineering completion and release software packages.

Co-Team Leader - Team Soar

Tulsa, Oklahoma Area

I am the Co-Team Leader for a team of engineers, called Team SOAR, on our President-funded senior engineering capstone project. We are currently building a virtual reality aircraft motion simulator which utilizes all 6 degrees of freedom via a Stewart Platform. I conceptualized the initial project, customized it with the professor of Aircraft Design for engineering education, then selected the student team and delegated responsibilities. Also, I successfully co-wrote a grant proposal to ORU's President, Dr. William M. Wilson, which now funds my team's project. Then, I presented our project to the American Society of Engineering Education's (ASEE) section meeting in Stillwater, OK. The poster from the presentation is attached below.

Founder And President - Senior Engineering Advisement Board

Tulsa, Oklahoma Area

The Senior Engineering Advisement Board (SEAB) is a student-governed board that I created and am leading with the intent to organize ORU engineering department's brightest students to make strategic improvements to our department from the ground up. After successfully pitching the idea to the Chair of the Engineering Department, I then created and am facilitating the Engineering Mentorship Program, which pairs upperclassmen with freshmen within the department to increase the freshmen retention rate and departmental community. As a whole, SEAB has already caused several noticeable improvements within the ORU engineering community, and it will continue to be a valued part of the department for many years to come.

May 2017 - May 2018

Head Resident Advisor

Tulsa, Oklahoma Area

I am currently functioning as the head student leader of a building of 200 of my peers, serving as a direct middle-man between the administration of Oral Roberts University and the residential student population. This leadership position has strengthened my skills of effectively communicating policy, representing residents’ views to administration, and building healthy community through servant leadership. I have worked closely alongside my team of Residential Advisors, leading, serving, and encouraging them to become the best leaders for their respective residents.

Aug 2016 - May 2018

Mechanical Engineering Research Assistant To Doctoral Student

Darmstadt Area, Germany

During the summer of 2017, I conducted unique academic research for a PhD student within TUD's Institute of Mechatronic Systems as a part of the NSF's REU program via Virginia Tech. The topic of research in Germany was mechanical engineering vehicle data management, where my skills in engineering computational methods, in-depth literature research, and formal paper writing were greatly strengthened. As a paid researcher, I wrote over 1000 lines of unique MATLAB script based on unique research I conducted. At TUD, I communicated complex thoughts across language barriers in an international, team-based working environment. My work resulted in an expected co-authorship in the IEEE 87th Vehicular Technology Conference in 2018. A sample of this work in progress may be seen in the attached file below.

Jun 2017 - Aug 2017

Mechanical Engineering Field Intern

Summer of 2016:I roughnecked several hitches on a land oil rig, safely operating heavy machinery with crew of other roughnecks. I learned the value of hard manual labor, and gained a valuable perspective of the engineering industry from a blue collar point of view. This experience also instilled within me a passion to accomplish mechanical tasks with a safety-first mindset, because no operation is too important to risk a man's safety.Summer of 2015:I served as a intern at H&P's Flexrig Machinery Center. I assisted with general machinery center operations and manufacturing processes. Some experience from this summer includes: non-destructive testing, quality control, forklift operation, materials transpiration, warehouse storage management, safety procedures, and general machine maintenance.

May 2015 - Jul 2016

Honors Engineering Research Assistant

Tulsa, Oklahoma Area

I conducted research alongside the Chair of the Engineering Department and two fellow students to investigate the aerodynamics of the NACA 2412 airfoil. With a student team I designed and fabricated analog experiments on the airfoil using a 3D printer. After comparing experimental results to CFD (ANSYS) simulations, I wrote unique laboratory tutorials that were used in upper level undergraduate engineering courses. This work resulted in my co-authorship of a publication in the American Society of Engineering Education 123rd Annual Conference, 2016, attached below. For a different professor, I conducted research pertaining to the relationship between science and religious faiths from an engineer's perspective, co-presenting results at the 2015 American Scientific Affiliation conference.

Aug 2014 - May 2016

Shift Supervisor

Tulsa, Oklahoma Area

After being hired as a team member, I was quickly promoted to be a supervisor. For several years, I led a team, most of whom where older than me, managed employees' schedules, trained new hires, provided excellent customer service, and conducted disciplinary actions when necessary. From this experience I gained valuable leadership experience, developed a fast-paced work mentality, and learned that some of the hardest working individuals serve in the food industry.
