Initially joining Arnold Clark as a contractor, after 12 months I was offered a permanent role within the Database Reliability Engineering team. Arnold Clark Automobiles is Scotland’s biggest private company and one of the largest car dealer groups in Europe.• Maintain, support and secure an extensive database environment spanning both on-prem and the cloud (MS Azure).• Design, configure and monitor a highly available database environment for various systems that are in continuous use throughout the year. Span this solution over multiple data centres to provide disaster recovery options.• Transition from the traditional DBA team and role to that of DevOps, Site Reliability and the Database Reliability Engineer.• Automated deployment of database servers and databases using Terraform, PowerShell DSC and dbatools. Effective source control at a team level. Elimination of toil. Standardisation of builds and deployment through pipelines.Resiliency through treating servers as cattle not pets.• Use of 3rd party tools to monitor and diagnose production systems. Provide anonymised dev and test environments.• Protection of company data through encryption of databases, backups and connections where appropriate.• Work together with the extensive (100+) development team to streamline the dev process whilst maintaining the principles and practices of the DBRE.

Contract role for William Grant & Sons, the largest family owned and independent whisky distiller in Scotland. The initial contract has been extended on six occasions. The role includes • Analysis of the entire SQL Server estate across all global locations to plan and implement a consolidation and upgrade project. • Audit of all required SQL Server related licensing for submission to Microsoft.• Sole DBA on the project to introduce a new ETL solution using SSIS, together with a Data Warehouse combining data from multiple sites and sources (e.g. Oracle, Progress OpenEdge, OSIsoft PI).• Implement a DR solution utilising Always On Availability Groups to a newly acquired DR site. Designed and implemented a three-node cluster to provide both HA and DR capabilities.• Migration of a key Oracle 9i database to SQL Server 2012 using the SQL Server Migration Assistant for Oracle.• Installation and configuration of Power BI on-premises data gateway.
