I am a space engineer with her sights on the Moon, inspiring the next generation to have a curiosity greater than the stars in the sky.My technical background started with degree in Aerospace Engineering from MIT, and since then I put that knowledge to use by working on exciting and impactful projects at ispace, inc. where I am currently employed as well as the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. From learning the ropes of instrument operations through planetary science missions at Saturn and the Moon, to developing instrument operations systems on upcoming Earth missions and now operating lunar landers I have been grateful to have had a diverse experience in space exploration. Working with diverse, international teams, leading real-time operations activities from the mission control center as well as designing and developing flight operation concepts and products are highlights of my work. Another is working on meaningful missions that have the potential to benefit humanity.Outside of work I consider outreach my second job. Navigating the world of STEM can be daunting, especially for those without mentorship, a family history, or a relatable example. Because my own path was never certain, I have dedicated my time to giving back to the communities that need it most. I spearheaded efforts to increase Diversity, Equity and Inclusion within JPL as the president of the Black Employee Resource Group and received the institutional Bruce Murray Award for my work in outreach. With over 100+ events under my belt and partnerships with various non-profit organizations, I aim to widen my reach and grow my impact so that students can see it is possible to succeed in this field.Learn more about my space journey on my website at janellewellons.com.
