Early on in my career a mentor passed on this advice, “Teach what you know and never stop learning.” I took this philosophy to heart by seeking out positions that fostered personal growth and provided an opportunity to continually learn new things. I have worn a lot of hats throughout my career ranging from tax consultant, to career coach, to now a psychologist-in-training. If there is one connection amongst all of these experiences it is that I have continued to learn, develop, and pass on what I know to those around me.Since starting graduate school, I have taken the initiative to immerse myself in topics of interest outside of the classroom to supplement my learning. I have joined several research teams studying a variety of topics such as counselor self-efficacy, the neurological effects of PTSD, and identity development. In addition to research, I have also had the opportunity to teach a freshman seminar course focused on college success strategies and TA for business professionalism courses centered around developing emerging business students’ career readiness and self-confidence in marketing themselves. In my clinical practice, I conceptualize clients from a humanistic perspective, utilizing Rogerian and existential principles in exploration of people’s experiences and desire for growth and change. As a follower of the scientist-practitioner model, not only are my interventions evidence-based, but my research is also informed by my clinical experiences. Counseling in a rural, under-resourced setting has raised many questions about how we can better serve a diverse client base, especially those from historically marginalized communities. I am continuing my education at the University of Missouri in pursuit of expanding the literature on how vocational psychology can be used as a mechanism for social justice in research and in practice.
