As Vice President of Philanthropy and Education, Wes drives the corporate strategy for community impact and vision for Battelle’s efforts to expand STEM learning opportunities nationally to build the workforce of tomorrow. These efforts include investing in STEM learning through corporate philanthropy, expanding collective impact strategies through the state and national networks managed by Battelle Education, and replicating quality school models through the Metro Schools partnership. Wes has led a transformational philanthropic strategy that has enabled Battelle to impact over 1 million students in STEM education annually in communities across the US where the company's employees work and live. Additionally, Wes serves as president of Battelle Education, working closely with federal, state, and foundation partners to advance education opportunities across the country.

Acts as a national advocate for STEM education, convenes stakeholders to identify opportunities across states, supports state STEM networks, and amplifies strategies that lead to a future-ready workforce.

In 2010, the Tennessee Department of Education partnered with Battelle Memorial Institute to launch the Tennessee STEM Innovation Network. Focusing on "kindergarten to jobs", the Network is developing high-quality STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programming to further ensure Tennessee students are college and career ready upon graduation from high school - and that the state has the necessary skilled workforce for the future. The Network utilizes STEM Platform Schools and Regional STEM Innovation Hubs located across Tennessee to increase student interest and participation in STEM fields, as well as to provide professional development and STEM learning experiences for educators. As director, oversaw the Network's management and operations for Battelle, connecting and building consensus among stakeholders from education, business & industry, and the community to advocate for quality STEM learning opportunities for all of Tennessee's students. In addition, maintained relationships with the state government and aligned Network initiatives to state education priorities while overseeing the management of personnel, statewide initiatives, development, and budget.

As program coordinator, provided project management of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission's STEM priorities funded federally by Race to the Top. Provided technical assistance to two UTeach replication sites, intended to boost the state's pool of qualified STEM teachers in pre-service, and oversaw the allocation of funding and coordination of professional development workshops provided by the state's higher education faculty to K-12 educators. In addition, as program coordinator, completed agency-wide federal reporting for Race to the Top, drafted contracts in accordance with state models, and routed to appropriate state agencies for approval.

In addition, drafted contracts in accordance with state models, provided contract management and routing to appropriate state agencies, and assured accurate and orderly flow of data to the agency through database management.
