About John Whitefoot

Throughout my career, I have followed my passion for solving challenging technical and regulatory problems within the automotive industry and communicating results to a variety of audiences, from CTOs of major corporations to the Administrators of U.S. federal agencies. As an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, I have focused that experience into developing and teaching courses to junior- and senior-level Mechanical Engineering undergraduates. My experiences in industry and government provide a valuable practical basis to draw from in my teaching and mentoring.Prior to joining Pitt, I spent over 10 years in industry and government on various projects spanning automotive research, optimization, automotive design and policy development, transportation planning, and team-based R&D with an eye towards product implementation. I spent almost four years at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) developing regulations that affect light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. My other research has focused on optimal design and control of hybrid-electric vehicles under real-world urban driving conditions, managing massive-scale full vehicle simulation projects, and researching interactions of urban design and transportation infrastructure.Specialties: Engineering Education, Sustainable Transportation, Multidisciplinary Design Optimization, Automotive Design, Hybrid-Electric Vehicles and Advanced Vehicle Powertrains, Design Theory, Sustainable Design for Global Markets, Automotive Regulations.
