Responsible for providing support to Engineering and DevOps as well as production environments located at AWS, and two Colocation facilities. Participated in bi-weekly on-call rotations, new product roll-outs, 'deep dive' systems troubleshooting, OS tuning/health/performance, and post-mortem analysis. Considered subject matter expert on Internet, switching protocols, server issues, server tuning, and security best practices. Key primary support and escalation point for newly created DevOps team.Major Accomplishments:1. Responsible for adding a '9' to production up-time. Discovered root cause and remediated multiple multi-day production outages around core components, ActiveMQ, MongoDB, prod switching network, and the in-house custom application.2. Responsible for provisioning new data center infrastructure: Server OS imaging and deployment; Got buy-in to architect security into the new network topology (OOB, VLans, FW rules, SW ACL, etc); wrote QA plan for servers, networking, and the production environment overall. Wrote test cases for performance and throughput testing. Tuned servers (Windows and Linux) as needed for optimum IOPS.3. Put into production GPU compute nodes based on Supermicro and Nvidia. This required knowledge of hardware debuging, BIOS configuration, Nvidia driver configuration. The monitoring and documentation required to operate and troubleshoot GPU compute nodes was also produced.4. Implemented SaaS monitor by migrating all production systems from Nagios to LogicMonitor
Systems Admin responsible for data and telecom operations company wide, across two plants. Operates, maintains, and provisions all facets of public facing web services and internal production, Windows and Unix, backing storage requirements for both internal production and public facing services, switched networks and redundant Juniper firewalls in both plantsMajor Accomplishments:- Key contributor in moving production systems from old HQ to new HQ.- Provisioned VMWare ESX environment.- Provisioned and installed a production environment in a partner's data center in GA. 50TB of redundant storage (4 nodes at 100TB total, on Solaris), 5 application servers (Windows), 4 compute servers (Windows), with the required switch configurations. Built, tested and validated on site before shipping to GA.- Provisioned 1.3PB of redundant storage across 12 nodes, split again across both plants. All systems multi-homed in 3 vlans, customized rsync scripts to handle the data backup of multiple file systems to secondary nodes. Solved numerous stability issues with patching and performance tuning in the OS and Samba. - Solved nasty production issues 3 times, boiling down to 2 faulty L2 switches and one bad cross-connect. In all cases finding the bad switch meant dissecting the network to isolate the bad switch, then replacing it, then putting the network back together and validating for production.- Completely redesigned and implemented network topology, by implementing an HP 8212 to handle 196 network ports used in video and film production. Lots of multi-homed processing and storage nodes.
I enjoy working with a team, to solve technical issues in highly fluid environments while assisting others, to ensure production goals are met on time.Started production on-call rotation in 3 weeks of hire date.Worked with incoming System Administrators to accelerate spin-up.A few notable achievements:Solved failing kick-starts in production by procuring access to core switches and routers, correcting switch port auto-neg and port speed mis-matches, as well as enabling spantree-portfast and IP-helper where needed. I was given 1 week, solved in 2 days.Put in-charge of kick-starting 40 Linux servers for a new production installation. This task included DNS entries, VSS6509 and VSS3750 switch port configurations, racking, and cabling, re-working the core fiber up-link trunks to conform to professional data center standards. I was given 1 month, completed in about 8, 12 hour days.Assisted many navigating the complexities of the production environments.I take production issues personally, and do whatever it takes to get resolution.
