I have lived on three continents and worked on four. I worked on and occasionally led major initiatives in public sector organizations, agri-business, mining, telecommunications, FMCG and e-commerce logistics.I began my working life in the music industry, working for record companies in the UK and Australia, before transitioning into IT in the 1990s. IT consulting led to strategy and operations consulting with Deloitte and PwC, working increasingly on public sector projects. Realization dawned that the longer I remained in professional services, the less I enjoyed it. I think, with the benefit of over a decade of hindsight, that I didn’t believe in the product enough to sell it. Consultants are worth the fee maybe 10% of the time. There’s my re-warmed take on it! At the time though, I just knew I was unhappy and needed a change. I began a six year stay at Australia’s most extensive retail network: Australia Post. While there I worked on two of the most significant initiatives of my stay there, projects with enormous operational and technology impacts, one (Parcel Locker deployment) as product owner and manager.I then spent four years as an independent consultant and contractor to public and private sector organizations before relocating to the United States, where a planned one year career and life break awaiting a work permit became a three year career break. The world changed quite dramatically during that time of course and so did I. I wouldn’t have predicted my working in a PVC pipe factory in my late 50s! Indeed, crusty old lefty that I have always been, participating in American capitalism at the entry level was not my ambition. But I haven’t enjoyed a job more since my early 20s. I’m in the best shape of my life and take pride in my consistent hand belling. Life can surprise you!
