I needed help in a critical area of the transmitter power control system of a major repeater product that Motorola was developing. Namely, a temperature compensated, high dynamic range detector circuit. I was very busy on other things so I put a lot of responsibility on James, especially given he had very little background in this area. James caught on very quickly to my needs. He first researched two potential methods. He studied the mathematics behind each approach and then developed a Labview program to simulate each. He also used a standard simulator tool (ADS) for comparison. James then built and tested a prototype of each method and compared the responses with the simulated results. The simulated and actual results were in very close agreement. James optimized each circuit for best performance and finally selected one of the designs. James then entered the schematic into Cadence, directed the PCB layout and ordered a few dozen boards to be fabricated. He also generated the BOM and ordered the parts. He then built up about 15 boards and tested each one. Finally he designed a simple Labview program to test all 15 models over several temperatures and power levels. The results were outstanding! I was very pleased. The temperature compensated detector was used in the final power control design. Many engineers have commented on its great performance. James also did a great job in presenting his work on his last day at Motorola as a Summer intern. I highly recommend James as an electrical engineer researcher, developer and designer.
