About Joshua Mandelbaum

I lead organizations to the next stage in their development. I joined 826NYC in 2013 during a crisis and used my expertise in board development, strategic planning, operations, and fundraising to rebuild the funding base, eliminate debt, and spur growth. By fostering a culture that values collaboration, openness to change, cultural competence, and good governance, we've grown from a staff of five serving 2,000 at our youth writing centers to a team of 12 serving close to 5,000 at schools and sites in four boroughs. During Covid19, we looked for opportunities and used the move to virtual programs to re-examine our program model and make long-discussed changes to benefit students and staff alike. When we returned to in-person programs, we were better positioned with funders and saw new opportunities to collaborate with schools and large CBOs. At Words without Borders, I served as the first paid executive director and professionalized a previously volunteer-run organization. I increased the operating budget by 40% and raised the organization's profile by developing a new Web site, social media initiatives, and creating an annual gala. Before my departure, I laid the groundwork for WWB Campus, a second site that provides recommended curriculum alongside works of international literature.

Joshua Mandelbaum Work Experience Details
  • St. George'S Society Of New York
    Executive Director
St. George'S Society Of New York Oct 2023 - Present
    New York, New York, Us
In my first year, I restructured the staff and operations better to support both a social society and ambitious nonprofit programs. I oversaw an overhaul of our communications to ensure that current and prospective stakeholders clearly understood the breadth of our work, history, and future ambitions. At the same time, I have re-engaged past donors and members and made new connections to ensure St. George’s Society of New York’s long-term growth. I am currently stewarding a strategic planning conversation to ensure that our programs are structured for growth and scalability and that the Society remains vital to our membership well into the future.
  • 826Nyc/Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company
    Executive Director
    826Nyc/Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company Jul 2013 - Oct 2023
    Brooklyn, New York, Us
In my first three years, I applied strategic thinking and industry best practices to stabilize the budget and diversify our revenue streams. Since then, I have worked with the board of directors and my fantastic team to double the number of students, the budget, and the number of volunteers engaged. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we found opportunities in the virtual space to strengthen our work, adding new program opportunities at every grade level. When we returned to in-person programs, we did so as a significantly stronger organization.
