I lead organizations to the next stage in their development. I joined 826NYC in 2013 during a crisis and used my expertise in board development, strategic planning, operations, and fundraising to rebuild the funding base, eliminate debt, and spur growth. By fostering a culture that values collaboration, openness to change, cultural competence, and good governance, we've grown from a staff of five serving 2,000 at our youth writing centers to a team of 12 serving close to 5,000 at schools and sites in four boroughs. During Covid19, we looked for opportunities and used the move to virtual programs to re-examine our program model and make long-discussed changes to benefit students and staff alike. When we returned to in-person programs, we were better positioned with funders and saw new opportunities to collaborate with schools and large CBOs. At Words without Borders, I served as the first paid executive director and professionalized a previously volunteer-run organization. I increased the operating budget by 40% and raised the organization's profile by developing a new Web site, social media initiatives, and creating an annual gala. Before my departure, I laid the groundwork for WWB Campus, a second site that provides recommended curriculum alongside works of international literature.
